  1. On SVCD & VCD it is extremely easy to extract the MPEG files back to MPEG form again using vcdgear. Is there a program out there that can do the same for DVD-R?

I am just talking home movies here burned with Ulead dvd Moviefactory...

  2. Easy answer... Yes. Smartripper, IFOEdit, TMPGEnc, DVD2AVI just to name a few have the ability to extract the audio and video (together or separately) into standard format easily imported into most video editing apps.
