  1. Hello,

I have been using TMPGEnc to convert my .AVI files to MPEG2, using the default settings. After creating the files, I notice that parts of the video that have a lot of motion, get very blocky.

I've searched through the posts and found some info on "2-pass VBR", soften motion block and using TMPEnc templates, other then the default.

Can you guys tell me what are the settings you use with TMPGenc to get the best quality DVD?

    Thanks in advance,

    VaBank

  3. To get good quality DVD compliant mpeg-2 from the TmpGenc do the following:-

Start TmpGenc, cancel the wizard. Open your .avi file as the video source, open the previously extracted uncompressed wav file as the audio source (look to the guides as to how to do this, its quite simple). Click load and select the Pal Or NTSC DVD template (use the one that has the same framerate as your source). Click load again and select unlock.mcf from the 'extras' directory. Now click settings and a dialog box will appear.
Next to Rate control mode, select 2-pass VBR and click the setting button next to it. Set Min 2000, Max 8000 and Average according to the length of your movie (calculate it using one of the bitrate calculators in the tools section of this site). Set Motion search precision to High (Highest isn't worth it IMHO). Set DC component precision to 10.
Click OK, Click Start, go out for the evening/go to bed/find a way to pass the next sevearl hours whilst it encodes.

    Have fun and good luck!

If your source is from a CAM, you may not be able to eliminate the macroblocks completely, as cam's eat up a lot of bitrate.

Setting your minimum to 2000 is a waste of bitrate, especially if your using multipass. Set it to 0, or 300 if your player complains (some players can't handle it if the bitrate drops too low. Those very bits your throwing away on the minimum will help to reduce the very blocks your complaining about in high motion scenes.

Make sure you use at least 'Normal' for your motion search setting (or anything slower).

As a side note, it's not necessary to perform the unlock step. All of the settings referenced are available without unlocking TMPGenc.
Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything...
