I've tried to back-up Ocean's Eleven by using ReMpeg to reduce the size of the movie twice, but each time the reencoding results in very bad quality video (blocky). Can this be some sort of protection?

    Other DVD's reencoded just fine.

  2. This is not a form a protection, just a bad re-encode (or re-encoder). I have never been a big fan of ReMpeg as TMPGEnc and CCE do a much better job.

  3. ReMPEG does a good job if you set the configuration correctly. A few pointers.

Under Options, set the scale to the bitrate you want.

Set the resolution to match the source, either 720x480 or 720x576 for the highest resolution.

Set Frame Mode to Match Source (you can experiment with Match Source or Progressive, but I usually leave it so the encoded file is the same as the source).

    Search Technique set to Full

Under Preprocessing alter the brightness if you feel it's needed but it's usually best to leave it at the default. Set high quality scaling on.

Under performance set to reference DCT

    Leave the other settings alone.

These settings should improve things a wee bit as they work great for me, but they will also up the encoding time by quite some considerable time.

If you still don't like the quality, shell out the moolah for TMPGenc, it's worth it.
