  1. I've had my TiVO for a couple of years now, and even though I had it hooked to a Panamax surge protector/line conditioner, it won't dial out through the modem anymore. So I was wondering if there's any way to use the TiVO as a video storage device, hooking it up to a VCR to record and output video. Has anyone done this?

  2. I have visitied the news group forum for TIVO in the past (I don't own one. Was just interested in learning how they worked.) They had a few links in there about the modems. Evidently they have a history of going bad. I think it is something you can replace yourself.

From what I read there, unless you have a very old model that has not received any of the updates, you can't just use it as a stand alone recorder.

  3. Yes, you can do that although you have to kind of 'trick' the Tivo into doing it.

Mine is set up for cable and satellite - when I want to record an external source like VCR, DVD, Camcorder, etc., I connect them to the Tivo and tune to a 'satellite' channel (for arguments sake, say channel 200). Then just hit record. The downside is that your programs will be named incorrectly, although you may be able to hack that, I don't know.
