  4. Here's the URL for the 2X DVD-R's I've ordered:

    http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/P-DVDR-4.7-GEN2Xfree.html

$1.15 per DVD for a spindle of 25 and free shipping. Mine won't come until Dec. 4th, but I've read a report on the same ones saying they did burn at 2X.

  5. Howdy, has anyone gotten their DRU500A to burn -R, -RW media at speeds greater than 1x?? I ask because no matter what program I use to burn with my only choices for speed are 1x. Anyway, successfully upgrade the firmware with no trouble to 1.0d and have used the following media with success.
    Memorex DVD+RW
    Sony DVD+RW
CompUSA DVD-R(only using GEAR PRO, Sonic DVDit PE, won't burn in NERO) only at 1x speed.
When burning DVD-R in Nero when it gets to the end of the disc the error comes up something like "cant finish disc at once" then shuts down.

No Success with Memorex DVD+R with any burning program.

My standalone player is a Pioneer D503C.

  6. So has anyone had complete success with the DVD-R 2X media from http://allmediaoutlet.com/P-DVDR-4.7-GEN2Xfree.html ?
I just want to make sure before I buy them.
    Thanks

  7. I emailed allmediaoutlet.com saying,

"I just want to know if your DVD-R/4.7GB 2X for General
Use media (P-DVD-R/2XP10, P-DVD-R/2XP25) is compatible
with the Sony DRU500A. And what is the brand name of
those media? Is it just "generic" name?"

    And their reply was -

    "Dear Sir:
it would work but depended on the setting environment."

So, I suppose that the media from allmediaoutlet is ok....

Anyone have an success stories from their media??

  10. I had emailed sony about which media BESIDES sony would work well with the Sony DRU500A and they said that they would ONLY recommend Sony products. I emailed them again saying how ridiculous that was and that there has got to be other products that would work for it. Then they gave up and apologized and gave me this link:
    http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/mediainfo_na.htm

HA! Tell me that only sony products will work for it will ya!

nope those datawrite classics arent listed as being compatible, ive got all my media from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk if you look on there site now they list all the media THEY have tested themselves for the DRU-500A. i -emailed them about the media, and they replied saying they have tested all the media list on their website with there own sony 500A using firmware 1.0d

I have burnt some camcorder footage using Mydvd and backed up some data using DLA, not tried any other software.

ive also now burnt on these as well "datasafe ritek classic"

    Great!
Are they all three officially sold as 1X media?
If you give the vendors where you bought them, we can see exactly
    which ones.

I ask because I have some 2X-rated Princo, so I know they make both 1X and 2X DVD-R media.
Just wondering what rating your discs are.

Does anyone know of a Mail Order source in Canada (or in the U.S. with low shipping rates to Canada) for DVD media?

    Thanks

  19. I've burned two data and one Video DVD using those 2X DVD's from allmediaoutlet and they burned at 2X with no problems. This was before the 1.0f firmware update.

If you are in Montreal like me, I've seen some at Microbytes, but if you want to order some for even cheaper, try Greytech.com. Bonne chance!

Could you please provide me more info about your Accu discs ?

I have Accu disks too but they burn at 1x speed. Here are some related posts to Accu disks or 1x branded media that burn 2x.

Accu media, but RITEK Manufacturer ID. Is it OK ?

All 1x media that burns at 2x speed in Sony DRU-500A 1.0f

I originally bought a sampler w/ 2 1x Optidisc DVD-R's in it. Both burned perfectly w/ no errors but both of them failed to be read on my standalone Sony DVD player. But they were able to be read in my Panasonic protable DVD player.

I have sinced been using Accu's they are cheaper than Opti's and they play in both my standalone players.

It is also important to note that my Opitdiscs where silver topped with a VERY light purple bottom.

  24. Today I bought two DVD-R spindles to test with my Sony DRU-500a (firmware 1.0f) using NERO 5.5.9.17.0

Bulkpaq "2x" Generation 4 (green top)
    ADVDInfo:
    00 6A 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 50 00 02 98 0C 13 .J...@....P.....

    30 30 30 00 05 88 80 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 000.............

Unbranded Silver top, completely unmarked (not even a number near the center)
    ADVDInfo:
    00 6A 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 50 00 02 8A 0D 14 .J...@....P.....

    30 30 30 00 05 CC C0 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 000.............

    Results:
Both discs were recognized as 2x capable by the Sony. They both have the same light-purplish dye.

The unmarked DVD wrote fine at 2x and reads back at 4x in my Sony DRU-500A and at 2x speed in my Toshiba SD-M1502.

However, for the Bulkpaqs, I got a "Power calibration failure" right after the lead-in was written (both at 2x and 1x writing). Do any others have experience with Gen.4 2x Bulkpaqs DVD-Rs (please give ADVDInfo as well)? It would seem another firmware update is due.....

    Thanks,

  25. I bought the bulkpaq 2x today and tried them in my sony dru 500a and they worked. however, i then upgraded the firmware to 1.of and i get the same error message, power calibration error. I get the same message if i use the datasafe media dvd x2 disks. Any ideas on what I can do...apart from bin them and buy new dvd's!

Okay. The ones that I ordered have a blue label on top. I got them from Shop4tech. We shall see what happens.

EDIT: They are Optodisc OR470-000 (Blue top, purple bottom)[/b]

  27. Update on the problem, on further inspection the spindle says 'Made in Taiwan' on the bottom so they cannot be genuine TDK discs. Presumably this ID has been disabled in the new 1.0f firmware. According to c't magazine (25/2002 p.125), "TDKG010000d9" discs made by Princo were disabled on purpose by Sony in the DRU-500A firmware (no mention of version but 1.0f wasn't released back then).

Maybe I should try to downgrade to 1.0d and use these discs and then upgrade to 1.0f again. If so, Sony isn't doing me a favour with this.

  29. Here's an update on the Bulkpaq Gen .4 "2x" media I wrote about a few posts back.

I downgraded to 1.0d firmware (the updater doesn't complain about me having a newer firmware. Guess what?

The Bulkpaqs now work fine and at 2x speed to boot. I've only tested with DVD Decrypter "write ISO mode" but the dvd-r plays back fine, even in my Sony 500A.
