When you say it's bad/good, have you tried it with standalone players (both major types: Japanese[Sony,Pioneer,...] and Chinese[Apex,Sampo,...] as they are usually quite different in the sensitivity level).
I bought the "generic" dvd-r's and dvd-rw's from All Media Outlet and so far I have not had one that was bad. Everyone of them has burned flawlessly, albeit at 1x, however, they work. At 61 cents apiece when I bought them, it was a steal then and at 65 cents apiece now, I still think they're a steal.

I have three DVD tv-top-set standalone players, and the dvd's have all played in all three. Two of the top-set players are Toshiba units and the third is a portable made by Audiovox (DVD1500).

  2. Joepic, that Meritline 2X media working well for you? I'm considering ordering 25 of them. Have you been able to record at 2X with them ok?

    Thanks

Since installing this burner. I made 3 disc

    1) Home Video using myDVD on Meritline DVDPro.
    Work on my PC,
    an old Sony DVD player
    a panasonic RP62
a no brand portable DVD player

    2) Backup one of my movie using ifoedit, burnt using Nero 5.5.9.17 on Meritline DVDPro disc
    work on my PC,
work on a older sony DVD player
does not work on the portable player mention above
    work on panasonic PR62
work on newer SONY DVD player 715P
    work on panasonic PR75

    3) Backup one of my movie using ifoedit, burnt using Nero 5.5.9.17 on Meritline Meritline 2X disc
    Same result as #2

In general, i think this burner works well for me so far. I bought the disc to try in Fry's on a number of players. It seems they all play the disc.

  4. I just got my Sony on Saturday, and bought 30 MMORE DVD-R. They didn't work at all. The PC hangs once the media is been checked by the burning software.

  5. Where is a good source for TDK disks ? I bought 20 Ritek 1x's and they write fine but will not read in any player

  6. well i just ordered the drive and from what i have been reading i think i'm gonna like it... i just ordered 25 ritek dvd-r my only concern is being able to play these on standalone dvd players i know some drives only use a certain format but i'm hoping these ritek dvd-r will work in most drive that use the dvd-r format... if not then i'm kinda wondering if any drive is worth having yet... i long for the day that there is only one standard which should be right over the horizon..

  8. I posted this in another thread, but I thought I'd reiterate it here. The Accu media on this link works great with my DRU-500, my Toshiba SD-K700 and my XBox. No problems whatsoever, even over 3.5 gigs (which my princo discs failed at) ... enjoy your burners!

Why should you have problem with burning over 3.5GB when this disk is 4.7GB ? (I never burned DVD )

I was having a problem with some Princo white top DVD-R which wouldn't burn beyond 3.5GB on this drive.[/quote]

  11. Hey been trying to get the word out, the new recordnow max 4.5 will help solve alot of these issues with media and burn errors.

  12. I just got my Sony and ordered 25 2x dvd-r from allmediaoutlet for about $1.20 each. Burned 15 so far not one problem, all play fine in my JVC and my girlfriends Memorex. Also used 1x optodisc and not a single problem. Checked both Nero and Gear Master and all is well.

  13. My results with the Memorex DVD-R, and DVD-RW media.

Memorex DVD-R just created coasters which is in line with everyone else.
Memorex DVD-RW mixed results (but see why).

I bought a three pack of Memorex DVD-RWs they were white on top. All three worked great. I went back and figured I would by a 5-pack. These were all silver and the drive refused to take the media.

Both of the media was identical in part numbers. I have sent a message to Memorex and I am awating a reply.

So all I can say is the DVD-RW silver Memorex media does not work.

    What brand were yours? Generic?
    Thanks!

I have had mixed results with Prodisc:
One older batch of Prodisc 2X, from a few months ago, worked fine on the DRU-500A.
That prompted me to order 30 Prodisc 2X DVD-R.
Ufortunately Prodisc changed something, because all I got was coasters.

I sent them back tonight to exchange for Princo 2X DVD-R, since that worked fine for me (the vendor sent me a sample, and I am getting it from the same vendor, so it should work nicely).

I just returned Prodisc 2X DVD-Rs yesterday argh (to exchange them for Princo 2X, since I have tested a sample of the Princo from SAME vendor).

The Prodisc vary by batch (a few months apart hough) - one batch was fien; another gave only coasters...

You think the software was at fault and not the media??
    Interesting theory.
Wish I hadn't returned the Prodisc last night!!

  16. Ok I went out and bought a TDK +RW disk as it has good results in this thread .. i write to it with 0 errors (used both nero and recordnow) the sony drive will read the written disk but nothing else will. Neither of my standalone dvd players or my dvd drive.

Is something wrong with my Sony burner ?

I don't think so, DVD+RW is the toughest format to play in a standalone dvd player.
I have 5 DVD players and all behave the same with the +RW format. DVD-R is a winner 5 out 5, DVD+R never tried, DVD-RW 2 of 5 and DVD+RW none.
ALL are TDK discs burned on the Sony DRU500, one SONY +RW came with the player.

  18. Well i just tried a TDK DVD-R and BZZT !! even it wont read in my drives !! This same media written in a pioneer reads in the drives so it is definately something with the drive/firmware .. grr

That is funny...DVD+RW plays in both my dvd players perfectly. Panasonic DVD-LA95 and Sony DAV-S300.

    UPDATE TO MY PREVIOUS POSTS!
    ------------------------------------------------------------

The "Generic White Label DVD-R 2" I spoke of earlier, is actually the "Improved Standard White-Top General DVDR 4.7 GB" discs that can be purchased @ http://americal.com/cgi-bin/smart_cart2.cgi. As stated earlier, avoid these, as the burner will fail mid-stream.

I got my Ritek "Gold/Purple" 2X DVD-R's today! I burned 5 straight DVD "Backups" without issue. The discs work fine in the PS2 and the Toshiba SD2800 Settop player! Only thing is, these 2X Ritek's will only burn at 1X in the DRU-500A. (Hopefully a future firmware update/hack will resolve this little issue!)

Has anyone had luck burning at 2X with Generic DVD-R? (Perhaps Princo?)

If you want the Riteks at a good price, (Usually $80 or less for a pack of 100), try these sites:

http://www.supermediastore.com/dvdmedia.html (Use the coupon code "ritekoff10" to get an extra 10% off!)

    http://accaproducts.com/1611.html

And No! I am not a Ritek employee... Just happy to have affordable media working on the DRU-500A!

    ------------------------------------------------------------
    SUMMARY:
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    <CD BURNING>
Works great! Has some issues with recognizing generic discs, but eventually works... Only complaint: Slowest speed is 4X, and next choice is 12X. I like 8X! Oh well... A VCD I burned at 12X played in my Settop, so I'll live... (Perhaps Drive Is still CAV at 12X?)

    <DVD BURNING>
Drive complains about affordable ("cheap") media. If you are patient, and play the game, or do your research (i.e. reading these posts), you should be good to go! This drive is not perfect out of the box, but with a few days of work you will be happy with your decision, no doubt about it!

    <SOFTWARE>
Who cares? Who ever installs the cheesy stuff they throw in these boxes anyway! (Note: This drive does require the latest EZCD5 update to be recognized by EZCD Creator, but again, who cares...) Use Nero or RecordNow with the latest updates and it is smooth sailing!

My final rating: 9 (If they would at Mt. Raineer it would be a 10!)

Anyone tried these: 2-speed WHITE LABEL Generation 4?
Can these be burned at 2-speed on the DRU-500?

  28. Someone had previously asked about 2X DVD-R media.

I recently got 10 Meritline 2x DVD-R discs, but have had a slight problem.
I'm not sure who exactly makes these discs.
The only identifying marks on them is a label on the plastic wrapper:
    ML-DVDR4.7G-2XW-001
I didn't see this media in the DVDR Media Meda reviews list.

They seem to burn fine, no errors. They burn at 2X.
(I use DVD Movie Factory to burn DVDs - Using the Sony DRU500A)
They play back fine in my dvd player (Pioneer DV-C503) up to a point.
The playback starts skipping badly toward the extreme end of the disc.
Tried playing them back it DVD burner and another DVD-ROM drive,
same problem - although it starts skipping earlier on the DVD-ROM drives.

If I burn the same data to a different brand disc (TDK DVD-R 2x and
    a Sony DVD+RW) there isn't a problem...

I guess they'll be ok as long as I keep data off of the outer edges of the discs... I'm glad I didn't buy a lot of them.

  29. I just got my DRU-500A last Friday, and I already burn 15 DVD-RW
    and DVD+RW w/o any problem (sony DVD-RW, sony DVD+RW
memorex DVD-RW and DVD+RW), never try DVD-R and DVD+R yet.
I do not see any one here talking about burning CD-R media, so I use sony drive try to burn CD-R.

I list problem below to see if any one else had the same problem with me, and any people here can figure out how to solve the problem(ex: change burn speed, wait for new firware, or return the unit......)

I use same source CD(protection disk) to test.
    1. I use CloneCD(4.1.0.10) to burn CD-R media (imation 24x and
    K Hypermedia 24x), coaster 10 disk already.

    2. I use the same method on my plextor 121032s without any
problem. I can use the disk no problem.
    3. I use the same method on DRU-500a no error with memorex
CD-RW(4X), I can use it no problem.

List below are what I am thinking about:
    1. Will this drive select the type of the media?
    2. Is this drive only good for "Rewrite able media?
    3. Will the new firmware solve problem?
    4. The problem is the CloneCD not fully support DRU-500a yet?

note: If the source cd not protection cd, works find for sony drive!!

  30. I was unable to get any media to work on a pair of my older DVD players. I was able to burn some movies using the MyDVD software onto a Sony DVD+RW disk and get that working on my X-Box. It didn't work when burned with Nero, but that could be user error.

I also boughtt some Memorex DVD+RW media. It burned successfully, but would not play in the X-Box
