The Phillips 880 stand alone supports writing to a dvd+r and dvd+rw....Q. am i able to write to a dvd+rw without finalising and then transfering the disc to my dvd-rw Pioneer 104 so that it can be backed up on hard drive = the DVD+RW disc is not wasted but formatted until equired again
....Does that sound right.

You might need to finalize before the 104 will read them, but I'm not positive.
But the idea is right. Wish I had that kind on money. -
Just recieved the unit today and trust me to pick a 171min movie ( its the only one in my collection), i hope to test the results at the end without finalising - will post results. Problem is i only have one dvd+ disc supplied with the unit, i hope i dont have to use a disc for every film i back up.

If it's DVD+R then you will need one for every movie. Get a few DVD+RW for dong the transfers.

So what you're saying is = once i've backed up to this DVD+RW it will need to be finalised so that my pioneer 104 will be able to read it , i was hoping to use the same disc until i transfered it to my hard drive where i would format it for future use......

You will have to see if the PC will read un-finalized DVD+RW's.
I'm not sure. -
It seems that my Pioneer 104 dvd-r/rw will read un-finalized DVD+RW created in a Phillips 880 dvd+r/rw. Formatted disc for future use...

This may now be irrelevant as you have your answer but surely it doesn't matter wether your disc is 'finalised' or not if it is an RW. An RW can be erased and re-used no matter what you have written to it. Finalising is only a matter of 'closing' the recording session and writing the Lead out, it's only data and does/should not stop a RW disk being erased and re-used, or am I missing something here.
-
I’ve always been told that a RW disc can only be read in the writer it was created ( excluding the same brand / model ) – since I’ve started my project I thought I would have to finalise the disc so that an alternative player would be able to read the information. I understand Finalising is only a matter of 'closing' the recording session and writing the Lead out” at its final stage hence can no longer be writen too - I want to use the disc over and over again.
The only thing that you’ve not covered is the fact that another device can also read the data /image and so on…… in fact I can use the disc without wasting it.

The quality is off high standard until i come across a lengthy film to which i have to drop the quality to super vhs or any film longer then 2 hrs.
