Why Satellite and Cable Providers Will Ultimately Need To Tempt You To Buy A New DSS-Cable Box
By Jerry Del Colliano
Hollywood movie studios can clearly see the advantages of delivering feature films directly to your home theater in the not so distant future. They are even OK with you making a digital connection between your satellite or cable system and your video source but understandably, they want to protect the integrity of their property (movies, concerts etc) with sophisticated encryption. Who could blame them? Movie piracy, especially overseas, is an epidemic that costs the studios dearly.
What is going to cost you as an early supporter of HDTV is the fact you are going to ultimately need more new hardware most specifically a new cable or DSS receiver. But you say you already have an HDTV receiver? Well, youll need a new one in order to take advantage of what Hollywood has in store for you. This includes HDTV feeds that stay digital throughout your system. These feeds will likely be either DVI or Firewire which is an issue that will be determined when the studios and cable-DSS providers negotiate their deals for their respective hardware. Once a high resolution digital video encryption system is agreed to, electronics manufactures can start creating even more compelling products like HDTV DSS TiVos and or HDTV ReplayTV cable boxes. Could you resist the idea of coming home and having all of the best HDTV pre-recorded for you and looking even better than it does now on a live feed to your system? I couldnt.

my 36inch widescreen pihilips tv is 100hz. is it a proper HDTV? or is there more to HDTV than just 100hz?
-
No 100 hz does not mean that it is a higher definition, it just has a higher refresh rate. I also have a philips 36" the 36pw9525c, this is 100hz but it is not a HDTV set.

Although, if and when you have the cable/satellite company install - that usually occurs at the same time.
Nevertheless, as some of us have been used to running FG59 around & through to different and many rooms, that particular size/impedance cable doesn't have the bandwidth to comply with the frequency specs of all of the HDTV formats.
You may want to consider changing out your video cable to RG-6, wherever you have any video cables.Whatever doesn't kill me, merely ticks me off. (Never again a Sony consumer.) -
Sorry, too fast with the fingers.
The FG59 reference in my previous post should have read - RG59.Whatever doesn't kill me, merely ticks me off. (Never again a Sony consumer.) -
FCC mendated most TV station must switch to HDTV in 5 year( I think ).
Samsung do have a set top box for downconverting for regular TV.
It was about $450 at best buy. -

Here's a couple of articles on DVI-HDTV:
