or get rid of the front end and go straight to the actual programs themselves, smartripper->dvd2avi->tmpgenc->nero

Lower the res just that little bit and increase your encode bitrate

Why would you want to do that? I've got nothing against doing it that way I just want to know why you would want to go to all the extra work when DVD2SVCD will do it for you. Other than make a few minor settings changes I ripped season one of SG-1 to svcd with it. The results where almost perfect. I was stunned how good they where. I didn't notice any real difference between the dvd's and the svcd's until I played the svcds on the big screen. Then the results where still outstanding.

I think I broke the quotes function. Anyway, I'm off SVCD's now going right to DVD+R.

  7. I rip to DVD-R. I've had so much luck with ripping to DVD-R. Quality is awesome, near original quality (98% like the original). There is little to no square pixels like SVCD. Typical VOB files are about 5GB each. I can rip 'em to about 2.3GB and the quality is just like the original!

You should try it! Buy a DVD±RW and rip away!

hey, i got nothing against dvd2svcd. in fact, i think it's a great all-in-one proggie for beginners. however, there are a couple reasons why i prefer to use separate programs.

    1) troubleshooting is usually easier because i can individually go through each step and proggie and figure out what went wrong
    2) it's much more flexible

for example, you can use flaskmpeg instead of dvd2avi as the frameserver, which allows subtitles and allows you to choose the different angles to encode in a multi-angle or seemless branching dvd (i.e. those with theatrical and director's versions in the same set of vobs)

or you can use vobsub/vdub to get subtitles....basically, this way you can use different proggies depending on whichever is best for this particular DVD
    3) i'm just more used to the separate proggies..

  9. You probably need more categories in the poll...

At least: VCD, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD, CVD and DVD.

  11. seperate progs def! smartripper -dvd2avi-tmpg-nero maybe with a little bit of spruce up or vcdeasy for chapters. Still havent really worked out chapters and menus?
I prefer svcd or even xsvcd to vcd but will compromise.
With seperate progs you can adjust the bitrates and such to fit your own circumstances eg 99min Cdr.
Also I need to encode 300ms + On audio to suit my player.
    Easier to experiment as well.
like the idea of CVD but purportedly my plyer doesnt like it.
Will get a DVD burner when they work as flawlessly as my mitsumi 4809?

  14. From this poll, kind of indicate compatibility rules.
Majority vote for the STANDARD VCD and SVCD.

Other formats are mostly for fun and machoness,
"Hi honey, see how many movies can I squeeze into a minCDR?"

The " rip and burn to CD" subjects are pretty much over, unstill DVD-R rules.
