  1. Hi ..

Just a quick question regarding VCD's.

I have always had to put VCD's on CD-RW's to get them to play in my Sony DVD player. However, the other day, I borrowed a VCD on a CD-R and tried to play it in my DVD player.

    Hey presto! It actually worked.

    What am I doing wrong?

The Sony S525 can actually play some CD-Rs.

Working brands include Princo, Vivastar, PNY and some DataSafe media. I haven't ever got a CD-R to work reliably though..

Which brand is your working VCD?

  6. Older Sony players actually don't play CDR and CDR/W.
and thus cause a long line of return.

The color of CDRW is silver as CD. Thus quite a few brand
work with Sony. CDR are much more un-predictable.

You are one of these person that has this "discovery".

The colour of a CD-R does not indicate how well it will play.

The reason why older Sony players have trouble reading CD-Rs is that they do not have a dual laser pickup. DVDs are read with a 650nm laser. This type of laser reflects badly on most CD-Rs and therefore causes problems. Most new DVD players have a dual 650nm and 780nm (for CDs and CD-Rs) lasers to enable the player to read both types of media.

CD-RWs reflect more light than CD-Rs at 650nm, which is why they work on most older Sony players.
