I was always wondering if there is by any chance that if you have a DivX AVI DVD Rip as a source file, that you can still keep that resolution ex. 640x480
and encode the file to MPG using TMPGEnc and burn the file as VCD with software such as NERO.
Will this work in stand - alone DVD Players that support VCD's or you have to change the resolution to 352 x 240 in order for the VCD to work.
I need opinions and suggestions from anyone that ever tried this
I never had the time to try it

VCD resolutions can vary from the standard but then it becomes non standard and is more commonly called a xvcd.
My Apex players will support: NTSC
352x240 standard
352x480
704x480
720x480
I have tested other framesizes (resolutions) but they cause the image to be shifted or not display at all.
There is nothing to be gained by enlarging an image to a higher res unless the original is already that way. eg.... If you want 704x480 then capture or rip at that size. There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -
Well, if you change the resolution it won't be standard anymore. Thus, you can't expect from standalone DVD playe to play it smoothly.

Many DVD players have no problem what so ever with non standard resolutions. Many users here make non standard xvcd and some modify the framesize and the bitrate well beyond the vcd standard and they play smoothly. The framesize is probably more an issue of display capability rather than smoothness. It will either accept it or it won't. The bitrate or framerate is more likely to affect smooth play. I think that if a framesize is not playable on a DVD player it will be immediately obvious.
The problem is that some players only support standard VCD but that appears to be happening less and less. Some accept minor deviations and some play everything within reason.
You have to run your own tests to see how far you can go. You also have to know that should your current player go bust the next one may not be so tolerant and you may not be able to play all your disks except on your PC of course. There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -
if I have a AVI file with 704x480 resolution and I encode this file into mpg still keeping the same resolution, then if I burn this file as VCD using NERO will it work in my DVD player or I have to make VCD's with standard NTSC resolituon (352 x 240)???

If I have an avi file with resolution 688 x 288 and want to convert to European PAL (4:3 ??), what settings should I use with TPMGEnc??????
Cheers -
vtoskov, if you stick to the standard it is a bigger possibiliy that your player will play it.
corskey, NTSC and PAL differs in two things: fps and no of lines. There's a good guide about resolutions under http://www.vcdhelp.com/newbie (Simply FAQ for video resolutions). However, I wonder how did you get 688 x 288. -

Well, every player is different.
Its a good idea to take a 10 second clip from any movie, and encode it a hundred different ways (ie different framesize, fps, bitrates, GOP, 44/48, mpeg1/2, etc) onto a CD-RW with a VCD header, then again with a SVCD header... to see what your player is capable of.
For my mustek, it will play everything, but 702x480 stuff needs to have a SVCD header...
