VCD/CDV/LD/CD compatibility

Since I have a Pioneer CD CDV LD Player CLD-97, could it play vcds? Would it be VCD1.0, or VCD1.1, or VCD2.0. Or would it have to be CDV format??

Wasn't exactly a DVD hardware question, but my Pioneer CD CDV LD Player CLD-97 is hardware.

Some LD players can play VCDs.

Some cannot.

CDV is akin to LD video on a CD media and is not related to VCD.

More specifically, Laserdiscs are not entirely a digital format -- the video information is stored, if memory serves (and it's been a while since I actually read up on this, so I won't swear to this in court ) using a combination of AM and FM modulation encoded as differences in pit size and depth. Therefore, you cannot burn "CD-Video" format in a standard CD-R(W) or DVD-R(W) burner since, as vitualis points out, what they called "CD-Video" back then was really just a five-inch Laserdisc that typically held somewhere around six minutes of video (usually an MTV music video) and a couple of CD-Audio tracks.

These types of discs are totally unrelated to the White Book "VideoCD" standard, which is an all-digital format based on standard CD recording and data formats.

Most LD players, unfortunately, pre-date the White Book standard and cannot play VideoCD's... and the only way I know of to find out is to burn a VideoCD and try it.
