  1. Hello,

The question is what is the best codec to use and with what parameters, configuration and application if:

    1. I have 30 mins of AVI captured from mini DV by firewire in 720x576 PAL.
    2. I want to have no more than one CD of compressed video.

...Is it better to code it in DIVX or MPEG2 DVD and why?
What configuration and which program is the best experienced and what filters, plugins, audio compression...Is it better to resize?

Is it big difference of 30 mins of AVI compressed to one CD comparing to 60 mins of AVI to one CD?

I would appreciate reply in details.

    Thank you in advance.

  2. it depends what you want to do with your finished file.

if you want to just play it back on your computer, use DIVX. if you want to play it back on your DVD player use MPEG-2.

  3. Why not MPEG2 if I on computer? The bitrate will be above 1000.

Because you can get acceptable quality with DIVX at low bitrates, but you will not be able to play DIVX on DVD player.
I doubt you will get decent quality of MPEG2 at DVD resolutions if you plan to fit 30 min on one CD.
So simple answer is : if you plan to play your video on DVD player, you have no choice other than MPEG2, but if you want to play on PC only, DIVX is better.

  5. From my VHS/8MM video source material I get artifacts/blockiness in Divx captures/encodes below 4000kbps-no matter what kind of filtering I use. I get great quality if I encode from uncompressed/huffyuv 320x240 or DV AVI to MPEG2 at 4000kbps and smaller files-20-25 minutes on a CD and over 2 hours on DVD. Recommend you stick with a MPEG1 or 2 for now. Also, when your source is DV, interlacing becomes a problem. Deinterlace if you plan to playback on a computer.

bpjenn, you must be doing something wrong with the DivX encode. I agree with geek rock. If you intend to play it on the PC only, go with DivX. Much smaller, with better quality if it's done properly. MPEG-2 is just an older outdated compression method of DivX, but necessary if you intend to play it on a standalone.
