How exactly old is the digital out for audio that uses a coaxial cable and an optical fiber cable? My eight year old (or older) Pioneer CD CDV LD Player CLD-97 has such connections. Any ideas? I know for sure my Sony DVP-S560D DVD player has Digital Out for audio. Another question, is BNC used anymore? On my Pioneer CLD-97 it has a BNC connection for video.

I started seeing TOSLINK (optical digital) outputs on some higher-end equipment around 1990, probably for use with DAT tapes. In fact, I have an older Sony CDP-690 CD deck from around 1991 which has a working TOSLINK output.

The manual for the Pioneer CLD-97 says copywrite 1993. This is the Digital out for Audio, like DTS, Dobly Digital. The optical fiber cable is inserted where it says optical in or optical out. A small plastic piece is removed before the cable is inserted. For a LD player is the BNC for video better than the S-Video??

BNC connectors are used all the time still in pro equipment ..
as with anything else there can be good and bad BNC connectors (some are 50ohm when purchased from unknown sources, and some have very poor construction and di-lectric) ..
as for if BNC is better than S-video the answer is complex because you can have BNC conectors used FOR s-video (there are just 2 BNC instead of one din connector) and as well you can have BNC used for RGB , RGBHV, YBR , SDI and of course composite. its just the connector - not the type of signal ..
