  1. Ok, i've ripped the dvd files using Smartripper. I've converted the main movie files to avi. then i cut the avi files in half using Virtualdub. Then I converted the avi files to mpeg using TMPGEnc. Next I burned the mpeg file to cdrw and cdr using Nero. vcd plays fine on pc. but my home dvd player (Konka KD-1800UI) refuses to play it, even though it is supposed to support vcd and svcd. if i've missed a step here somewhere someone clue me in. I've printed and read and followed instructions from about a half dozen tutorials. The cd's i've tried so far are Memorex cdr and cdrw and Imation cdrw. Is it my processing, the dvd player or the cd's i'm using??

  2. If you post more details on how did you encode your files then you might get some help:

What was the framerate of the original AVI?
    What template did you use?
Was it Mpeg1 or Mpeg 2 (VCD or SVCD)?
Have you tried burning them at a slower speed?

  3. memorex cds are often problematic when trying to use as vcd or svcd. i can't say for imation as i've never used them i often use gigastorage cds (you should be able to get them at best buy or if in canada at futureshop) they seem to have a good compatibility rate. if you can't find those try some cheap generic cds they often have a nice compatibility rate.
    hope that helps

  4. where do i look to find the bitrate of the original avi? when i went to convert, the bitrate calculator recommended 1572 kbps, which seemed high to me but i went with that. template used was videocd(ntsc) mcf
    mpeg 1 vcd
    burn rate was 4X
any other info i can provide which may help?

  5. I think even this info is enough - it seems like you encoded your VCD with 1572 kbps which isn't VCD standard (1150) effectively making an XVCD (non-standard VCD) - these aren't by far as compatible with DVD players as VCDs are. Try encoding without adjusting the bitrate (keeping it as template recommends - 1150 for VCD).
