When trying to open an *.asf file in VirtualDub, I get a "Couldn't locate decompressor for WMV1 ( unkonwn )" Error, when it's done reconstructing the ASF index block.
Anyone know where to locate a apropriate decompressor?

I could be mistaken, but it soulds like you need a Windows Media codec that I don't believe was ever released in VFW format, only directshow.
You may be able to use graphedit or other .wmv converion tools to convert it back to .avi with a VFW compatible codec. TMPGenc or avisyth might also be able to open it.
