I have read Plextor are the best but Lite-on are good for the price.
I currently have Philips pcrw406 usb1.1 which writes at max 4x. The problem is that about 1 out of 4-5 cdrs I burn can't properly playback the last 5-10 minutes of a SVCD , resulting in freezeup/stalling. I don't know if the problem is in the burn or in the player. THe raw mpeg or bin/cue plays perfectly, so it isn't the actual video file.
SO which model/type of Lite-on or Plextor cdrw will give me better results?
SInce I don't have USB 2.0, I am lookinbg for an internal, with a write speed of at least 32x.
Thx a lot

LiteOn give excellent results at a good price!.
I use Nero for burning SVCD's, with good results. -
I have the Plextor 40X (USB) and it works just great! I have yet to burn a coaster with this burner. Software that I've used to burn CDs are Roxio and Nero and both have worked just fine.
My motherboard also doesn't support USB 2.0, so I had purchased the PCI card that supports USB 2.0 and gives you 4 slots. It's pretty cheap .. probably around 20 or 30 bucks.
However, I will probably get rid of this burner now that I've purchased the Sony DRU500A DVD burner. It only burns CD's at 24x, but that doesn't really bother and the Sony burner works just fine for this. -
Both Plextor and Lite-On burners are good at what they do, so I think you'd probably be happy with either one. I've had my Cendyne 48Xwrite/12Xrewrite burner (actually a re-badged Lite-On) for about 4 months now and have not made a single coaster with it yet on over 100 burns (data, music, vcd, svcd, etc).
Like you, I did a lot of reading here and elsewhere before making my purchase and came to the conclusion that either a Plextor or Lite-On was the way to go. When I saw my local Office Max selling the Cendyne(actually Lite-On) for around $50 after rebate, I was sold. Today, I've seen them going for as low as $30 or so after rebate! Not bad for a 48X burner. I've read that Plextors are more "solid" or well built (the Lite-On does seem a bit "flimsier" than some I've owned, but should be fine if treated well). Anyways, at 1/3 to 1/4 of the price of a Plextor, I'm very happy with the Lite-On, and even if it should happen to "die" earlier than usual for some odd reason, I still figure I'll be getting my money's worth out of it at least. Heck, @ $30 it's practically recyclable.
By the way, if you decide to look for a Cendyne re-badged Lite-On, make sure on the back of the box under "Drive Model" it says "LTR/48125W" (for the 48X model that is). Cendyne buys burners from a few different companies to sell as their own, so the LTR will assure you it's a Lite-On. Cheers. -
For those that own Lite_on, do you have any problems playing the burned svcds on them? As I said previously, my current Philips drive sometimes has problems playing the last 5-10 minutes on some of my svcds. I don't have any other players that can read svcds so I cannot determine if those discs could play trouble free on another player.

well, personally I prefer to watch vcds/svcds in the comfort of my living room on my tv with a standalone dvd player, so I've only actually watched 1 svcd that I can think of using my burner. But it did play fine all the way to the end using windvd.
Mocha, I honestly have nothing against Plextor burners (they're very good too) so I'm not trying to badmouth them, but you might want to consider buying the cheaper Lite-On burner and with the money you'd save, also buy yourself a cheap $60 Apex standalone player that will play svcds. Just a thought. You could get 2 for the price of one that way! -
Creative is also a good choice

alittle off subject, how long does it take to burn a full 700mb to a cd with a 40x burner?

How I loath them." -
a liteon 32X drive will burn at full 80 min cd inabout 5 mins, I prefer my liteon 32X to my plextor as its a better drive for reading vcd to the drive... basically its cheap & it works better. In the end its your choice & for your money I'd choose a liteon of the more expensive plextor basically they are the same drive anyway.

I rip most movies with Smartripper and DVDX, to SVCD format varying the bitrate in DVDX to obtain most movies of up to 108 minutes so they can be burned to 90 minute CD-r's using NERO, and a LiteON burner!.
The results are very good!.

Hello-I've got nothing against cheaper drives, the Plextor I have now is very durable, never a single coaster with Nero in nearly a year of use, good media compatibility. I can also say, from first hand experience, that Plextor's customer service is above average. At the price of CD-RWs these days, I guess you decide if you want one good one or two cheap ones.

I would never dispute that the plextor aint a better drive in build quality terms but for reliabilty my liteon has never failed a disk yet my previous drives have! mitsumi, yamaha & the plextor I still have in the other PC. If U have the money buy a reliable drive like the the new plextor but if U R on a budget there are loads to choose from. Just take care in your choice.

As someone who tries to keep in touch with all drives out there, i'd go either for the Lite-On or AOpen drives, they offer the best price/features/stability and performance ratio from all drives, not to mention they both officialy support 90/99 min CDR's
