  1. I capped a bunch of shows overnight with virtualdub and had that error message waiting on me when I got home. It captured all 12 hours but when I tried to open the file with WMP, it said "format invalid." I opened the file with virtualdub and got this message: "reconstructing missing index block (agressive mode)." It came up in some kind of virtualdub import filter window and eventually (a 60GB file) opened it. I started a batch "save AVI" process to save some segments of the file and to my dismay, it went through this same process again. It is taking well over a half hour to open the file. Anyone know what happened? I capped at 352x480 with picvideo @18 and use windows 2K.

Its the same msg you get when you get an incomplete download of an avi file. You must have had an abnormal end to your cap so the file did not close properly.

Vdub recreates the file index. The problem with your file is its so huge that it will take avery long time to reconstruct. You must have a lot of free space.

Another problem you will have is re-driving the keyframes which is even slower to do. If you don't your file will be ultra slow to navigate with no key frames. After that if the file is too large you may not have the space to save it after rekeying it. To see that option click on "popup extended open option" on the open file menu of vdub (its where you chose the dir and file).

That's why its better to have something to do timed captures to split these files for you. That way you don't have all your eggs in 1 basket.

There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

    PS
Based on the title of your thread the file will not be completely recoverable (if at all) because the avi standard must have a maximum allowable number of index blocks per file. It appears that you have exceeded that number sometime during your cap and that is when it crapped out. Could be that 4 gig limit again.
