  1. i'm going to be capturing a TV show that's on in a couple of weeks. I don't yet have a DVD burner, but I'd like to get one soon, so here's the question.

after i've done my capturing, i want to encode to SVCD (so i can watch the episodes on my DVD player), and also to a low res DVD format in preparation for putting all the episodes of the show on DVD-R. (when i get the burner, lol)

each show is 30 minutes long, and there are 6 episodes, so that's 180 minutes.

can I increase the bit rate of the "low resolution DVD" template in TMPGEnc in order to make the file sizes as large as possible, so there's just enough room to fit them all on one DVD-R? will the resulting file/s play back on my DVD player? (the standard template settings don't appear to produce quality that much better than VCD, i'd like to get the best quality possible.)

I don't really want to use the hi res DVD template because I only have VHS to tape the show from the TV with in the first place.

    any ideas welcome..

    thanks,

    -Mark

You will never get better than VCD quality from VHS however BIG the file are.

  4. SOunds like you want to make a XvCD eXtended VCD.
Increase the bitrate to say 1600 and you will get the best possible quality in VCD any more will not get better quality. Check that your player likes Xvcd in charts. I make Vcd with 48000khz sound and mine play back fine. Test using a CDRW so that you dont have mega coasters.

Do you plan to use PCM audio?,
for 180minutes you would have to lower
the bitrate to 1750 so it will fit it on a 4.7DVDR

With MP2 Audio you could have around 2500 bitrate and still fit
    180 minutes on a DVDR.

kind of.. like i said i want to put these files (TMPGEnc calls them "DVD low resolution" files) onto DVD-R to be authored as a DVD at some point. till then i'll just be storing them on CDR's as data, so playing them back in my DVD player isn't an issue. thanks anyway

it's just a comedy show, so i think MP2 audio will be fine. thanks for the info

  8. How bad is Mp2 audio compared to say Wav or AC3, or is it not bad at all?

depends on the bit rate of each but wav is the best as its uncompressed and its a tossup on stereo files between mp2 and ac3 .. ac3 sghould be a bit better as it uses more adv compression methods .. but in accual practise there isnt a whole of diff..
