5.1 selection in DVD2SVCD, what does that do?

When converting dvd to an SVCD you can set the audio outputmode to 5.1. I always thought that SVCD's don't support anything else than stereo.
I made one SVCD using this setting and I had sound on it, but don't know
if this is really 5.1 or if my standalone DVDplayer converts this sound to something else.
Anyone knows "THE TRUTH".
