    Good Evening,
    This should be a quick one. I just upgraded to Win2K this evening and reinstalled Vdub 1.4.10. Before I was using Win 98SE and Vdub was working (there were some problems with audio sync in the captures). However, after the upgrade to Win 2K and reinstalling Vdub, I can no longer perform video/audio captures. In fact when I click on capture AVI, I get the following error message "No capture driver available." HELP!!. It is probably something very silly that I have overlooked. But I just cannot seem to find what I am missing so that I can reinstall it.

    Cmon guys what did I forget?

    Update, I found the following "VirtualDub needs a Video for Windows capture driver to capture. "
    My capture card is an ATI card all I can find for them is a WDM driver. Thus, are WFV drivers available for Win 2K or wil the Win 98 SE ones work????

  3. In order to get the ATI card working with Virtual Dub you will need the VFW to WDM wrapper at this adress:

    http://shopgeo.virtualave.net/wrapper.zip

    Just download, unzip and install by Rightclicking the INF file and choose "Install". This one works for win98 and win2k...

    Oh, also you COULD have looked in the left side menu at capture\capture avi with ati radeon.... but it's ok...

  4. You don't need any wrappers!!!!!!

    Just foloow this instruction:
    1) Just install SP2;
    2) Copy vfwwdm32.dll files from WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386 to WINNT\System32;
    3) run 'regedit.exe' programm
    4) find in regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\MediaResources\msvideo

    and creat new key MSVideo.VFWWDM
    and into this key write:
    Name Type Data
    Description REG_SZ Microsoft WDM Image Capture
    Driver REG_SZ vfwwdm32.dll

    If after this changes VirtualDub steel don't work then:
    • 4) find in regedit
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion

    and insert new string:

    Name Type Data
    drivers.desc\vfwwdm32.dll REG_SZ Microsoft WDM Image Capture
    Drivers32\msvideo REG_SZ vfwwdm32.dll

    If msvideo exist, then create msvideo1, msvideo2 and so on.

    PS: Sory for my English

    Southside,
    Thanks for the help. OBTW, I did use the guide to the left, thats how I orginally got started converting my VHS tapes to digital. I did download the latest W2K drivers from ATI as well as MMC plus DVD 5. All got installed without problems but........
    Once again thanks for getting my wheels back on.

    FilComArt,
    Thanks for the very technical description of how to edit my registry to trick W2K into using the 98 version of VFW. Since, I am not overly technical and have never messed around with theregistry, I think I will go the wrapper route first. However, if the performance/quality suffers I will use your suggestions.
    Once again thanks for extending a helping hand.

    OBTW, I dumped 98SE after many years of faithful service in favor of an OS that does not have a file size limitation (within reason that is). I was very gratified to see my ATI capture files larger than 4Gb without halting at the FAT32 limit.

    Just a quick update that I forgot from my previous post. After upgrading to W2K and installing SP3, do I still need SP2?? or can I find the same files in SP3.??

    The Windows service packs are cumulative; SP3 contains everything in SP2, which contains everything in SP1. Hence the reason they keep getting larger and larger

    So, no. You don't need SP2 anymore after installing SP3.

    Good Afternoon Gang,
    Well, the new VFW2WDM did the trick. Now Vdub will go into capture mode and does what I would consider a superior job. Now only if I could figure out how to get it to capture the audio as well.
    During capture I can hear the sound quite nicely. However, on playback there is NO AUDIO just video. I have check all of the usual things like volume and whether the speaker is enabled. I even reviewed the Vdub audio settings (AVI and direct stream copy) at 44Khz stereo. But no audio while playing back the capture.
    If I use the ATI MMC to do a simple avi capture it has the audio included on the playback so I am thinking it is a simple minded (which fits me) problem with Vdub.
    I have tried to just save the audio as a wav file and use MS media player to play the audio. Now here is the strange part, it plays the file but there is no sound. Also if you load it up into Tmpgenc and go to the merge/cut page you can see a histogram of the audio but just no sound outta da speakers.

    What is it I have forgotten. I am sure it is something stupid.

    The NT driver is what people call the wrapper.

    It looks like the same files. drv and dll.

    The wrapper comes with an inf to install the keys and values so you don't risk playing in the registry with regedit.
    There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

    hmmm.
    lets see...

    * double click speaker icon
    * click Options/Properties
    * select (o) Recording - (instead of (o) Playback)
    * make sure you select/check [x] Line in and [x] Aux
    ..just in case, but usually, just the [x] Line in needs to be checked
    * next, click (OK)
    * now, make sure theat [x] Line in is checked by checking it, even if
    ..its already checked, just check it again, making sure the the [x] is filled in.
    ..sometimes, it needs to be waikend up again.
    * click Options/Properties
    * select (o) Playback - (unselect (o) Recording)
    * next, click (OK)

    Now, make sure that [x] Line in is checked and set your volume of Line in
    to midway or less. Too much over the mid-point will add noise or distortion in
    your recording.

    Now, depending on your use of your apps, ie MMC (if you use it again) it may or
    the apps may reset what you just did above, and you may/may not have to redo
    these steps again. Every once in a while, I have to go through the above steps
    for whatever reason - I've gotten use to it. But, MMC may be changing it on
    some pc's.

    That about does it.

    vhelp,
    You are a genious. It was exactly as you said. Boy, you do not know how many times I have checked that. It must be a "feature" of W2K. Did not seem to have that problem before with 98SE. But at least now I know.
    You were exactly right. Even tho I checked the recording box for line in, when I went back to playback mode and subsequently returned, lo and behold it had gone back to its original state (i.e., not checked.) Hmmmmmm........

    Like I said, if you guys do not know how to fix it, then noone knows.
    Great job and a bazillion thanks from one frustrated newb. I sure hope I can return the favor at a later date to someone else.

    Thanks,
    Ed
