  1. Hi,

I am new to all this. I have got a Lite On DVD ROM, and a Lite ON 40x CD Writer. I am using Nero v5.5.

My problem is that I am confused about which program is best to use to rip DVD's, and convert them to VCD/SVCD.

Any help would be required as to a good starting program that gives good results. If it gives the best, all the better.

I am still confused what chapters are. Are they the same as chapters on a dvd?

  2. I find ripping the dvd with DVD decrypter to your hard drive then use DVDX 1.6 to convert it to vcd using the panasonic 2.5 codec gives the best quality for me. All of these are available either from kazaa or the internet, then write them using nero.
I have no problems running them on all dvd players that are vcd compatable however, if you are using ntsc dvd's you cant use the panasonic codec and the quality is degraded. Using this method you can also just remove the parts of the movie you want or the whole thing. Vcd easy is also a quick and easy way though i cannot compare the quality as I have trouble at the moment using it on my pc (probably an error on my part).
Chapters are the sections to which it has been split on the dvd i.e the individual vob. files if i am correct.

  3. DVD2VCD is a free all in one program for ripping a DVD and converting to VCD. If your DVD player can play SVCD/CVD, I'd recommend you try another free program called DVD2SVCD (both links are on this site, do a search). If you are new to the DVD "backup" world, these all in one programs take a lot of the configuring and "ooops" moments out of the process. You can use them while you are still learning other methods. I don't want to sound like I am belittling the two programs by saying that what they "simply" do is automate the process of ripping the video and audio, encoding, and then preparing for CD(s) burning, because they do more than that.

Anyway, short answer here is you can use DVD2VCD or DVD2SVCD to take the guess work out of backing up your DVD's. Out of the bundled software, you will still need to get the encoder (either TMPGENC or CCE-Cinema Craft Encoder). TMPGENC is a free encoder (depending on the version you get) and CCE (for your purposes) is around $10K (last I checked on their website. Me personally, I use CCE for my CVD making and it gives me GREAT results for digital and non cartoon stuff, while TMGENC does a better job of doing older cartoons.

I am not overall sure, but I can confirm the cartoon part!
Those days, there is a daily 8 hour marathon of Looney Toons on a european version of Cartoon Network, the british Boomerang. So, I grabb daily 8 hours the DVB stream (it is possible, this channel is FTA), and re-encode to xCVD using 1000min 2000 average 3000 max with TMPGenc pro 2.56 (2pass).
I have to admit: Those xCVDs looks amazing! Identical the source.
My last attempt to re-encode cartoon from boomerag channel was a disaster (6 months ago), but now, I think I find the perfect settings for them!
