I was wondering if a stand-alone player (dvd) can play sacd does that mean it can play svcd???

No.
SACD = super audio CD. Search it with Google and you will find more info on it. Basically, it is a better audio CD.
SVCD is completely separate and no surprisingly, a player's ability to play SACD has not bearing on whether it can or cannot play SVCD.
