I'm new at creating DVD's, and as my first project, I'm converting a couple of old VHS tapes to DVD...
Here's what I've done so far:
Lacking the money for a GOOD analog capture board, I've transferred my VHS tapes to miniDV, and then transferred that to Adobe Premeire via firewire capture. (The resulting AVI file was automatically saved.. didn't have to save the premiere project..)
I then used TMPGEnc to generate a .mpg file from the AVI file. I used two filters... the first was the noise reduction (which helps ALOT for ancient VHS tapes), and the second was a big of gamma boost as the original recording was too dark. I also had TMPGEnc cut the first and last seconds of the video off. I chose the default DVD settings in TMPGEnc, changing it to use CQ mode with 100% quality. (It's only a 51 minute video.) As well, I told it the stream type is "System (Video + Audio)"
Now, I'm trying to use DVDIt! PE to create a DVD. The mpg file imports just fine, and I haven't had any real issues with using the software, except for one:
I want to set about 30 chapters in this video, and I've found that when using the screen in DVDIt! for setting chapters, that the further into the video I get, the long it takes to play anything. For example, I'll hit 'pause', then move the time to 40 minutes.... and then hit 'Play'. The time counter will move for several seconds (longer the further into the video I am) with no audio/video movement, and then come to life. As well, the video image shown when I manually move to a time in the video is WRONG. The audio/video is staying in sync with each other, but its NOT in sync with the time shown by DVDIt (or set in DVDIt).
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, is there a solution? Perhaps using different authoring software? (Does Ulead's DVD Workshop allow setting real chapter points?) I've tried SpruceUP, but its an extreme pain in the butt to set chapter points precisely with it.
As I'm new to all of this, any other suggestions people have on anything would be very welcome. I'm flexible on what software I use (as long as it doesn't cost too much - such as CCE does.)
When I convert the AVI file to mpeg, should I be de-interlacing it?
Should I do my noise reduction, clipping, gamme correction, etc, in Premiere, and then exporting the timeline? If so, what format should I export the timeline in?
Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated...
Thank you
Gary
