  1. I edit NTSC DV home movies using SDV8 and render to AVI using either the Mainconcept DV codec or Microsoft DV codec. I then encode the edited AVI file using the Mainconcept Encoder. The encoder selects by default the DirectShow import module. However, when the created mpeg file (either VCD, SVCD or DVD) is played back on my PC, the output is very "choppy or jerky".
I then disabled the DirectShow module and instead used the AVI import module. When I try to import the AVI file into Mainconcept Encoder, I get the following error:

    "No video data found"

Note that the captured raw AVI file from SDV8 is having the same problem when encoded to VCD, SVCD or DVD using the Mainconcept Encoder, that is, very "choppy or jerky playback".

But the raw or edited AVI file will playback smoothly when encoded in TMPGenc 2.58 Plus.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Check your field order setting. If you get it wrong, it will produce a jerky video playback.

  3. DJRumpy,

I'm creating a VCD mpeg file. My source file is DV NTSC.
The Field Encoding setting always defaults to Progressive frame.
Can't change to Top Field First or Bottom Field First. They are grayed out.
    Any other suggestion?

You need to unlock TMPGenc. Select the LOAD button. Browse to the TMPGenc folder, and then the EXTRA subfolder. You should find a template there called UNLOCK. Load that and all of your settings will be available.
