  1. DV333 from pioneer has been the "play anythings" player.
It's replacement DV353K llok like is having problem on
    SVCD.

The new pioneer DV-656 cost about the same when DV-333 was on
the market, about $180. But it has these :
    Progressive scan output
    Virtual Dolby
Built in 5.1 decorder with 6 RCA audio output.
    Play Audio-DVD
and still "play anythings but a kitchensink".

The closet competing model has to be Sony's DVP-NS500V.
Sony's unit plays SACD,which sound better than Audio-DVD.

    Any other contender ?

This year's JVC models are good. Play a wide variety of formats including officially supporting SVCD, MP3, JPEG, VCD, DVD. Depending on the model you can also get DVD-Audio and progressive as well as a 7 disc changer.

I have the JVC XV-FA900BK and I also have a Pioneer DV-333 from 3 years ago.
