    You can do subtitles in TMPGEnc with AviSynth, but is an advanced piece of software. If it is only a one time thing, you may want to try a demo version of Ulead Video Studio VS. All these are free except for VS's which is a demo version.

    My avi file is decoded with xvid decoder.

    Actually it is easier with Virtual Dub. You create the subtitles with Sub Station Alpha, save the file. Load your video with the Subtitler or TextSub filter, and watch them appear magically on your video! The Guide. Use "Scenario 2, and if you like, you can substitute the framserve part with saving to AVI (using a codec, of course).
