  1. Ok I know i'm probably a big retard with this and there are tons of places to find this information out, but if someone could just point me in the right direction it would greatly be appreciated. I have captured some home movies from vhs to my hard drive using my ati 8500 in the highest quality mode 720 x 480 and I would like to put this on svcd's using dvd2svcd in the avi2svcd mode of course, but how do I make a avi file from my captured video? Sorry for the stupid question, but i'd certainly appreaciate any help here. Will

  2. It sounds like you are capturing to .mpg- is that right? If that's true you can burn it using Nero or whatever and it will be ready to play. I use my 8500 to capture with VirtualDub and convert to .mpg using TMPGEnc. Then I burn with Nero. This (arguably) gives the best quality.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

  3. YngwieJM: Yes I am capturing to mpg. 2 with the 8500 in the highest quality mode 720 x 480. Basically I'd just like to make it to a avi file then let "avi2svcd" do the rest of the work in conjunction with cce. Do I need to have VirtualDub to make my mpg. to an avi? I can't burn it directly using Nero as anything over 9 min. or so is to big for a 700 mb cdr. Cheers ,Will

  4. You don't want to convert you mpeg file to an avi file and then back to mpeg again, this makes no sence and will cause considerable quality loss. Capture to AVI to start with, a good format is YUY2 with Huffyuv compression (lossless). This will create a very large file, but will be very good quality. You can then convert this avi to mpeg2 for SVCD.

The reason for capturing to AVI then converting to MPEG is that software encoders such as TMPGEnc and CCE can do a better job of it in their own time, rather than having to encode in real time during capture.

  5. Ok I'm assuming I'll need some sort of software to use YUY2 & Huffyuv in conjuction with? All I have on my ati 8500dv is mpeg capture. Sorry I'm a bit lost as to what to do here. I went to the website for YUY2 & Huffyuv and downloaded it. Actually I already had it on my system for the dvd2svcd. But I see no way of capturing using YUY2 & Huffyuv without some sort of combined capture software. Thanks Will
