  1. I have a divx in .avi format and I would like to make a VCD. The size of the avi is 734mb approx. Now I've tried Nero and the guide from this site, but strangely enough the file gets bigger than it is!! It grows to 864mb approx. which is weird I think.

    Obviously I can't burn 864mb to a CD-R that supports "only" 800mb max.

What do I do? Why does it grow in size? How do I make it smaller, or do I need to convert it somehow?

Any help would be appreciated, thanx

    Cheers,

Untrue. the 800Mb limit is for ISO data file format, which streaming video is not. Your usual CD-ROM supports 650Mb of data, yet still you can fit 74 minutes or over 740Mb worth of 44,1Khz 16bit WAV format audio files as CD-A (streaming audio) on the very same disc. In a similar manner, your 800Mb CD-ROM supports over 900Mb of streaming data, let it be audio or video.

This is due to differences in error correction standards, the internet is full of FAQs on the matter. Happy burning!

Oh, and to be precise, if you have an 80min CD-ROM which truly would support 700Mb data / 800Mb streaming, you will have no other choice, but to use a "source range" filter to create two VCD files out of one source. For this, there are also multiple FAQs on this site and on the internet. Choose Convert from the left panel.

And finally, do use the search function on the board. This matter, like many others, have already been widely covered here :)

  4. You need to be a bit more specific to get help.

Is it "growing" in your Nero only when you see it in your right tree-view pane? If so, you need to be aware that Nero usually looks at files this way since some progs look at 1MB as 1000KB and some as 1024MB as it should be. If the file you were trying to burn as VCD was Mpeg1, there would be no problem burning it to 800 MB CDR as you can burn about 900 MB to it in Mode 2 (VCD), but i doubt you meant 800 MB CDR, i think you meant 700 MB media with ability to burn 800 MB in Mode 2.
However, it looks like you are trying to burn AVI as VCD, which is impossible since VCD requires Mpeg1, you need to encode your AVI to Mpeg 1 and then burn to CDR as VCD.

First, get these tools from the "Tools" section on the left side of your screen:

    TMPGEnc
    VirtualDub

In a nut shell, use VDub to scan your avi for bad frames, save it
    to another file.

Still using VDub, save the audio as a "Wav".

Start up TMPGEnc and load the avi as your source for the video,
load up your wav as the source for your audio.

Make sure you load the correct template in TMPGEnc for VCD
    encoding.

    Click on "Start".

This will give you a rather large mpeg file that can be split
in half for burning to 2 disks.

If you have the time check out the "Templates" section in the tools
section. There is a site that has "1 Disk VCD's" templates (Kwags site).

I say "If you have time" cause the encoding process for these 1 disk
    templates is very long.

If you have any other questions check out the "Guides" in the fourm.
If you STILL cannot find anything then post again and I'll see if I can point
    you in the right direction.

ALSO, do not forget to check your DVD player, if you are going to use one,
in the DVD Players section to the left. It has quite a few listed and it
tells you what your player will/will not play.

    GoodLuck!
