There are two things that affects longevity of the media. One is dye and the other is reflective layer.

There are two type od dyes: Cyanine and Phthalocyanine. Cyanine is chemichally unstable and must be stabilized with addition of oher material. hthalocyanine is stable and its life span is expected to be more thatn 200 years.

The reflective layers are of thre types: gold, gold + silver and silver. Gold does not corrode so it is obviously the best reflective layer. Its drawback of course is cost.

So, if you want the best go for gold.

  3. Thank you ian follow, but now I have another question, is there a place I can find out which type of "Dye" the Discs made by Memorex use, so I can find if they have the more stabel dye?

I've never had a "Coaster" from Memorex Audio CD-R's, excpet when I dropped one, so it wasn't the disc, ti was the user. However, if Memorex DVD-R's aren't as good as the CD-R'sa I've ogttenf rom them, coudl you suggest an Alternative?

So far I've had perfect CD-R's for VCD and Audio CD from Memorex, a pile of Maxell "Coatsers", some Mediocore Imation Cd-R's, and some Mediocore Sony CD-R's, I had a few good "HP" CD-R's, but I don't know the first thing about HP DVD-R's.

I'm buying a Panasonic DMR-HS2 soon, and I want to make sure I have the "best" Blank Media for it within' my budget, and whiule you've answered my question about the Disc's "color' you've peaked my curiosity in the Dyes that are used. Any help would be appreciated, and thank you in advance.

DVD-R media is a whole diffrent beast, but the principals are the same.

There is a very long thread in the forums that discuss all of these things and right now "gold" tends to fare better than "silver" for several of the manufactureres. The general consensous is that cheap media has poor quality control and often one batch will be perfect and the next could be crap. You won't have many problems with the name brand, but they are $$$.
