Black Hawk Down
Can anyone help, I'm trying to backup a DVD of Black Hawk Down,
I have ripped it in SMARTRIPPER (worked), Imported it in to SPRUCEUP and it appeared to go in ok. Now the PROB... the movie is 2h:18m:34s long and it appears as full time in the coading but when I double click on it to edit chapters the film is loading up as 2h:14m:12s, picture is there and is perfect viewing quality as is audio. but it cuts out 14m:12s short... idon't know if this is the max time for a DVD-r 4.7 and the program automaticly cuts the file to fit? it only comes in at 4.2Gb. Would it be wise to REMPEG the file? any other tips and suggestions most welcome...

I would say it needs re-encoding.
Putting a movie of that length on 1 dvd-r is awkward to say the least.
try vob-it or some other program before re-encoding. Strip credits and all that with ifo-edit. -
I myself in the last few days have had problem with reencoded files showing up too short... but it turns out they really got chopped somehow in my case and that Maestro was not at falt...
Very likely that file does need reencoding before it will even think of fitting. -
I've used spruce-up for 3 hour plus movies and it works fine, I've done Black hawk down and it needed re-encoding as it was too big to fit on a DVD-R.
Are you using NTFS as the .m2v is over 4GB's ?. If you are not anything over 4gb will be cut off and this might be why you are missing the end of the film. -
Many thanks to all espec. "spooki" for their help have used REMPEG to compress files but have still got to burn to DVD. Seems to play OK in spuce-up now
Can anybody help an old man -
i just backed up my BHD dvd and it worked fine (just the movie on one disc) 3.2 GB to be exact. I didn't leave the add on's such as menus and such. I just used DVD dycrypter, DVD2AVI, Tmpgenc, ChapterXtractor, DVD Maestro, and Nero to burn worked great and no loss in quality. here's a link to the tutorial i used...

i use nero instead of gearpro 6 though.
hope that helps if you have any questions let me know.

You seem to be using the same software as me (except I use Smart Ripper) and I have a problem.
When copying a widescreen movie, my end result is a stretched full frame version.
I have all the settings correct in all software (99.99% sure). Even adjusted the one in Maestro. The .vob file made by Maestro plays back widescreen in my file player, but the disk after Nero does not!
Any advice? THANKS

It may be the settings in TMPGenc (i am assuming you use this) when you open the program make sure video only is selected and then in the settings just make sure you select 16:9 NTSC which to my knowledge is widescreen or 4:3 which is full screen. I think TMPGenc defaults to 4:3 so if you haven't been changing that to 16:9 525 lines aspect then that is probably where your problem lies. Also, to make sure when you start the long (3-4 hr) encoding look at the picture and you'll be able to see if it's widescreen (16:9) or fullscreen (4:3) you'll see it in the program video screen. Hope that helped.

let me know if it worked...thanks. -
Thanks for the tips. I think I solved it. It WAS the setting in Maestro. When I processed it in Maestro with it set to letterbox, I copied over the old files without deleting them first.
When I deleted all the files first, it worked.
Coincidentally, at the same time in Nero, I noticed that I had the "Joliet" box checked by mistake.
Would this have had any effect? I'll check it tonight when I get home from work.
Thanks again. -
glad you found out what it was although i never had that problem in maestro, if it encodes in tmpgenc with either 16:9 or 4:3 it still comes out whatever the setting in tmpgenc i had set. but anyway if it's fixed (great!)
as far as the joliet deal with nero, i don't believe it matters because i think mine is checked. have a great day.
