I dont know if this is newbie or advanced...
    ....i've never encountered this.

I have an AVI file, that is using MPEG1 and MPEG layer 2 audio codecs.
Its set to NTSC VCD standards...but..its an AVI.

    I put it in V-dub:
    352x240, 29.97fps
    # of I/P/B: 5768/22054/54734
    avg bitrate: 1131Kbps

    audio: 44khz, 224Kbps layer II

I put it into TMPGenc MPEG tools and it says its an Illegal Stream.
I want to put this as a VCD, but noticed..its *IS* a VCD...its just an AVI-VCD.

    Any ideas??

yes there is avi files with mpeg contrary to some peoples knowlage...

avi is a wrapper and and as a wrapper can contain many different types of compression and non compressed files ...

info on mpeg/avi files is here using mpeg1 compression: http://www.graphcomp.com/info/specs/ms/editmpeg.htm

of course even divx files - which are mpeg4 type - are another type of mpeg/avi files
