Just tried to burn my first VCD. Used TMPGEnc to encode the said file. Followed the instructions to the letter, but still ended up with a VCD (?) of 2.15 Mb as opposed to the 635 Mb of the copied file.
Obviously there is something I'm NOT doing, but what?
I have a widescreen telly, a brand new DVD player that plays DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3, so I encoded the file at 16:9 625 PAL. The encoding took over 6 hours, I then burnt it to disc through Nero 5.5, and...nothing.
All I had on the disc was a few files that were VCD linked but wouldn't open.

It sounds like you didn't burn the mpeg itslef but only the support files for VCD, check your CD, does it have a mpeg file on there ? if not do it again but also copy the MPEG file.
If there is a mpeg file (and it indeed is only 2.5 megs) use TMPGenc. again.
But his time use the wizard, it shows you all the options. -
If you look at a VCD in explorer it will show as only being 2.15mb this does not mean that it has'nt been burned correctly. A vcd will not have an mpeg file on it anyway, if done correctly it should be a DAT file which should be in the mpegav folder (usually names avseq01.dat). You can force mediaplayer to open and play DAT files.
Have you tried the disc in your stand alone player, or have you just assumed it wont work because it is only 2.15mb.

The 'finished' disc has 5 folders on it.
CDI (CDI_IMAG, CDI_TEXT, CDI_VCD.APP, CDI_VCD.CFG)
EXT (LOT_X.VCD, PSD_X.VCD, SCANDATA)
MPEGAV (AVSEQOI)
SEGMENT
VCD (ENTRIES.VCD, INFO.VCD, LOT.VCD, PSD.VCD
I have tried it in my standalone player, and it comes up 'Disc Error'.
It looks so simple on this forum, or is it me that's simple? -
If you have a good MPEG file and it plays OK on your PC, thentry this:
Download DVD Movie Factory Trial from Ulead and burn the MPEG with that. You can also setup menus with sound, etc... and it's cheap! $45.00 or so...
Here is a link:

Hope this helps! -
Thanks All. The MPEG encoded file works brilliantly, so I'll try that link.
Fingers crossed! -
From your discription of the directory structure it seems you burned your VCD correctly. What DVD player do you have, have you ever played VCD's or copied audio CD's on it before.

I have a Deccavideo (no sign of any model no. etc.) and I have played copied discs on it, containing MP3.
Just burned another disc with the Ulead DVD Movie Factory Trial, but still no joy. Tried to run it on my standalone, but still showing disc error.
However, I have come across the following file in the folder I have been burning from:
VCD_XA.IXA 666,370 Kb IXA FILE
The original video clip (pre encode) is 681,286 Kb
MPEG (Post encode) is 713,409 -
Checked Google for Deccavideo. Two possibilities are:
Deccavideo 5110 or Deccavideo DDV (?) 2110 -
It may be that your DVD player can't play them.... You might want to take the disc to an electronics store and see if you can get it to fly on one of their players.
I have the RCA 5240P and it will play anything I throw at it... -
Cheers Mavrick. I'll try it on one of my mates players and see what happens. Just my look that, go for a machine that seems to be all singing all dancing and yet just falls short of my reqs.
I'll post as soon as I've tried it. -
I know the feeling... My first DVD Player said VCD on the front... Only to find out it would not read CDR or CDRW! It would only play pressed VCD's! I think this was dirty marketing...
So I went and got the RCA 5240P for $99.00 and sold my old one... -
If DVD Movie Factory accepted the MPEG and burned the CD... You have a good VCD or SVCD....

Finally came across a model number on the discarded packaging. It is a Deccavideo DDV 2130. Have tried to find the Decca website, but I can only find the music publishing side of the business. It has played all other copies I've tried, but not the VCD format. Is there any sort of hack (just something I've seen elsewhere) that can overcome this?
