TMPGEnc and Codec

I used TMPGEnc to convert my AVI file to MPEG2 (SVCD) file. I remember reading somewhere that TMPGEnc does not have codec but it is using existing codecs on my computer. Can this be reason why my output is not very good. Does it mean that TMPGEnc was using less good codec ? Or how is it really with TMPGEnc and codec's ?

We need to get some terminology straight. A Codec is an Encoder-Decoder, i.e. it will Encode and Decode a particular format/compression method. You Need a Decoder (at least) to open and play any file produced using the equivalent Encoder.
TmpGenc is an Encoder only. It can produce output encoded in mpeg-1 and mpeg-2. In order to play back its output you need the appropriate decoder to be present on your system. Also TmpGenc requires access to a suitable Decoder in order to read the input files you supply it with.

When you use TmpGenc to produce mpeg-2 output, it is performing an Encode process using its built-in encoding engine. This is independant of any other mpeg-2 encoder or decoder you may have installed already. When you play back the resulting file, it will be played using a decoder external to Tmpgenc.

The quality of TmpGenc mpeg-2 output is dependant on many things such as the quality of the input file and of the many settings available in TmpGenc. It is ulikley to be anything to do with any codecs on your system.

Sorry if this is a bit lengthy, I just feel that too many people use certain terms incorrectly and loosley, often confusing the newcomer to the digital video 'scene'.
