    What is the recommended settings for VCD playback on a standard DVD player to maximize resolution?

    any changes would make it an XVCD.

    make sure your player can handle these. generally involves upping bitrate and using filters.

    get best source possible to make your vcd's from like dvd rips

    I have never seen any settings on the DVD player for VCD playback other than PAL/NTSC conversion.
