I am new to the forum and have not seen this topic address in my searches. I am interested in making a 6 hour VCD on a DVD. My thinking is as follows:
a VCD is roughly 700 meg= 1 hour, a DVD is roughly 4.6 gig=6 VCD hours.
Can I burn a huge 6 hour 4.2 gig VCD file onto a DVD for viewing on my stand alone DVD player? The DVD player is VCD compliant.
I am interested in this so that I can rip some old 6 hour VHS tapes to MPEG files and then burn them as VCDs to a DVD.
Thank you.

Someone must have an idea as to whether this can be done or not.
Thank you.cai -

if you look around on this website youll find most answers. -
It most likely will not work. You can't even author VCD to DVD. There is fully compatible aproach tough (and with acceptable quality, I guess). It is 352x480(576) DVD, VBR with 1500 kbps avg (and 192 kbps audio).
-
This is not true. VCD specs are within DVD standards, ie 352x240 (also 352x480 and 704x480 & 720x480). It can be done, as I have done the very same. Guys look in the HOW TO section and it is explained there.

We are both wrong in something. :P
VCD is not within DVD spec while VCD res and MPEG-1 are. Audio sampling rate is the problem. Not speaking about structure. So no VCD on DVD. I OTOH missed 352x240(288) res(I'm not Lo-res guy).
One more thing: no need to stick with VCD datarate standards: it is DVD not VCD anymore, no matter encoding method, resolution or bitrate. -

You lost me on the "not sticking to VCD datarate stuff". I believe the original question on the thread was how to transfer VCD to DVD. One can guess the VCD that the poster is referring to is 352x240 and varying bitrate. -
And I believe the original question on the thread was how to transfer VHS to DVD similar to VCD[/b]

The answer to your question is "yes", except the audio has to be converted to 48ksps. You can import the VCD video directly into an authoring program - it is entirely within the DVD spec.

Thank you SLK0001
Cai,
I hope we have not confused you. Just know it can be done and relatively pain free. -
What authoring program can do it ?
It says here http://www.vcdhelp.com/vcddvdr.htm that
using Sonic DVDit SE you can only store 225 min / DVD-VCD.
I need 450 min.
SpruceUp (free trial available, but SpruceUP is discontinued and no longer sold)
So is thre any other authring program ? -
Check out Ulead DVD Movie Factory. $45 only and has support for MPEG audio. May have restrictions to resolutions, don't know. But demo is available.

A big thank you to all of you.
Very interesting and helpful discussion. I did go to the "How To" section and printed the instructions. I have been holding out from buying the HP 200i DVD+RW for my computer until I had the confirmation as outlined above. I am seriously looking to save about 10 boxes of tapes. Among them the last eighteen Johnny Carson shows. I hope that after all these years the tapes still play. One good thing is that I have bought the DVDs of some of the movies I saved.cai -
They say that
Ulead DVD MovieFactory does not allow any import of MPEG1 files
How come TMPGEnc cannot put it back together at 48 KHz.
So basically it looks like there is no DVD auhoring proram that can do this. -
CAi,
I heard that u planned on putting VHS tapes to DVD ?? but i'm wondering how the VHS tapes can be encoded to video files such as mpg etc..
I'm new and hope u can help..
Thx , ENdanger -
Well, last night I loaded six hours of mpg1 files to Nero and then tried to burn them to a DVD using the HP 200i. It did not work. The first coaster locked at about 54% completion and the second coaster stopped after only 3% completion.
After the first coaster I tried to use the burning program that comes with the HP machine. I loaded the files and then put them in sequence on the frames down below in the program. This program looks very similar to the new Nero Express. However, when I hit export, the equivalent of burn, I got a message that the program had generated some errors and was closing. The same kind of error I get with Windows Media Player when I load the Nimo codec package; except that I have not loaded the Nimo package. I have to mention that I did turn off the encoding part of this loading program.
I then tried to join the files using tmpeg. I discovered that some of the files were not compatible with each other. So, I replaced those with other mpg1 files and tried to join them into one big 4.4 gig file; tmpeg crashed at about 12% completion.
Has anyone used the HP DVD authoring software? Is it any good?
Does anyone recommend something better? Nero? Ulead?
Can Nero burn to DVDs, or do I need the new Nero Express and the MPG2 package?
Thank you.cai
