i specified in TMPGenc that i wanted the final result able to fit on a 700meg cd, but the end result after encoding was 1.11 gigs, which was larger than the original file. what's the problem?
thanks

12twelve12,
It might help if you posted some details on your encoding process such as bit rate, whether or not you used 1 or 2 pass encoding and the length of the file in question.Warning! I'm baaaaaaaaack -
Right - the problem is that you didn't choose Mpeg-1 Video-CD (non-standard) in the System tab in your Settings which you MUST do if you are adjusting the bitrates to fit your VCD onto 1 CD otherwise TMPGEnc will just go ahead and encode a standard VCD and the file ends up larger than 1GB.

i used the wizard that the software comes with. the original file is a 698 avi, which will already fit on one disk, but i wanted to make a vcd. i don't understand why the encode is 1.11 gigs. shouldn't the mpeg be smaller? i'm new at this, that's why i chose to use the wizard. since i selected the option to have it fit on a 700meg/80minute disk, i figured it would select the correct bit rate for me.

Look - you seriously need to read guides on this site for some background info. Just to give you an idea: the size of Mpeg that is encoded from AVI depends on the legth of the movie - 1min=10 MB for a standard VCD so it will be around 1.1 GB for 1hour 50 min movie. If you want to fit it onto 1 CD then do as i said in my previous post.

zero, i've read this site up and down, THEN decided to give it a try without just jumping into it. this is my first try, and my first problem, so i posted it. it may be a simple problem, but don't just assume someone hasn't taken the time to try to learn things first.
now back to the issue, i believe the avi may be really be divx. should i (with VDUB) uncompress the divx to a raw avi. i don't believe the quality would improve, but maybe it would be easier to deal with. and i've just now realized that the mpeg i create from the avi has no sound.
this is probably wrong but is my assumption: for a vcd you could lower the bitrate so a movie longer than 70 minutes could fit on a single cd.
please correct me. -
Sorry for assuming you haven't read the guides just that your questions and assumptions are leading me into thinking that. Now, i believe you got DivX Avi file which is OK to load into TMPGEnc like that. For sound problems - you should first extract audio with VDub and load video and audio separately into TMPGEnc. And yes, you can fit more that 70 min onto 1 CD (in fact, you can fit 777770 minutes if you like) but keep in mind that the more minutes the lower bitrate the poorer quality. And if you want to fit more than 80 min of VCD on 700 MB CDR then you will be making XVCD (non-standard VCD) which is not as compatible with DVD players as is VCD - you should check DVD players section to see if your DVD player supports XVCD.

ok, thanks. i'm trying again right now without using the wizard, but i had could not find where to change the bit rate and stuff like that. does vcd have a standard bit rate that cannot be changed? i didn't think so, but maybe so. so i guess right now it's using the standard for vcd. i'll prolly have to post again when it's done.

Standard bitrate is 1150. Looks to me your trying to make an XVCD in which case it may or may not playback on your stand-alone player. You take it out of compliance and thats the risk your taking. You might be better off splitting the file to span 2 disc's in this case. I'm not saying not to try it, but even if you present player will play these files there's nothing to say the next one you purchase will.

It is me again. Yes, VCD does have a standard bitrate:1150. And audio has to be 224kbps. To be able to change settings you need to load unlock.mcf which is located in folder called Extra inside Template folder. Just press LOAD button and you will see that folder. Yes, right now you are encoding a standard VCD and it will be 1.1 GB again.
