  1. I have converted the subs to .ssa.

Then with maestroSBT i have chosen "segments start 00:00:00.00 and end 00:45:40.00 thats how long the first part of the movie is.I just want to cut the subfile in half so it matches with the first part of the movie....I think i'm doing something wrong with this part ?

Then have i converted as an output script submux file.

Then multiplexed with winsub mux but after its done i got error messages in the log "Stream #0 image to large encoded size >64K skipping line 1 ...." and several lines after "Warning no subtitles added".

What am i doing wrong ? i just want to have permanent subs to a svcd ?

  2. Ok
I skipped the "segment start part" and chose to create an uncompressed BMP.
After that i think i got an sucsessfull multiplex....The output file is bigger then the input.....
But when i test play it in power dvd, there is no subs ????
Should i try to burn it and see if i got subs on my dvd player.

  3. I cant help you with winsubmux, but here's a suggestion:
try subbing and converting with virtual dub and tmpgenc.

    Here's the guide:

I have been using this one for over a year now for conversion to vcd, but you can also use it for making svcd's. All you have to do is select the correct template(svcd) in tmpgenc.

J that will create hard encoded subs, he wants selectable subtitles.

Draven, no software player supports soft encoded subtitles in a SVCD. Any test you run on this will have to be done on a hardware player. Make sure and test both CVD style and SVCD style subs to see which one your player supports best. If it supports both I would suggest using CVD style since it seems to be more compatible overall with dvd players.

It sounds like maybe you're confused. winsubmux is for creating selectable subtitles, and which will only work in a set-top player that supports them. Permanent subtitles, which will work in anything because they're part of the SVCD picture, need to be added with a filter in VirtualDub or Avisynth and reencoded.

From what I've read, CVD-style subs are more compatible for two reasons. The first is just that they've been around longer, so they were a de facto standard for a while. The second is that many DVD players apparently have firmware bugs that prevent SVCD-style subs from working when PBC is enabled. That really, really sucks because SVCD subs are a formally accepted standard, and CVD subs are not. If you're curious, I think I remember seeing some references to this problem in archives of the vcdimager mailing lists.

Another note: the only software I've found that can reliably author an SVCD with subs is Nero (full or demo). Nero only handles SVCD-style subs, but they work even though it seems to author with PBC. CVD-style subs don't work, which makes me wonder if Nero is converting them on the fly or something. Unfortunately, Nero's authoring is pretty weak in all other ways. I have one disc authored in VCDEasy with PBC and CVD-style subs that works flawlessly, but another one failed to display certain subs. I tried both CVD subs with PBC and SVCD subs without PBC, and the same subs failed to show. It looks like the missing subs probably correspond to spikes in the video bitrate, but I haven't bothered to verify that.

  7. Thanks evereyone. Good to see your out there and helping peolple who havent the time to read and get things right.
    J. I have mpeg2 movies and don't want to bother to get virtualdub to aceppt them.If it is possible anyway?

Adam. i really want permanent subs but when i have mpeg2 files i thougt i would try with selectable subs and see if my dvd player supports it. I will try burn it and find out. Thanks again you saved me some time there...

Sterno. i have easyvcd and nero so i guess i will try them both.

One other thing, i think that the dvd2svcd guide is teriffic ,but some say here that u could add subs with that software too,but i havent figuerd that out ?? And i have alot of audio equipment at home but think it's to difficult to create a mpeg2 5.1 sound from a svcd or mpeg multichannel (if it's even possible) so can i get a better audio performance just to raise the audio bitrate 384kbit/s. My english sucks i know...

Hmm, I have heard of people having problems with subs in vcdeasy (vcdimager) as well, but all mine seem to turn out fine. I use CVD style subs by the way. Of course if you need CVD style subs you could always use I-Author's multiplexor as well. I have never had any trouble getting I-Author created subs to work on any player that supported CVD style subs.

  9. So it seems my dvdplayer doesn't support selectable subtitles...Tried both CVD style and SVCD style subs, only with vcdeasy though, but it worked for you adam...
So my only solution now is to throw away my mpeg2 files, and encode my avi again ..virtualdub framrate and tmpgenc etc.....? There is no way to get in permanent subs in a finished SVCD is there ?
