  1. Hi, being this is my first message, I would like to say I really enjoy this forum, it has been quite informative and very helpful....

My stand-alone DVD player will play standard VCDs and some XVCDs but I always found the quality of those formats somewhat lacking. It would not play any type of SVCD or miniDVD which meant I could not use a higher quality video format or so I thought....

After reading some of the remarks regarding DVDx, I decided to give it a try and after some tweaking was able to write a very high quality XVCD (near DVD quality) without any sound sync problems, video glitches or any type of digital artifacts (not even a hint of a macro-blocks or color blotching) which would play in my stand-alone DVD player....

So now I am curious if this format will work for other brands of stand-alone DVD players which do not allow the SVCD and miniDVD formats but do support the XVCD format....

    Have fun.....

    I set DVDx as follows:

    Input settings - Angle=1, Use ASPI (Checked), Keysearch=Once, 48Kz=High quality, Volume=1, Offset pixel=0,
FrameRate Output=23.976 (matched to the VOB), Detect Progressive 24hz (Checked), iDCT=FPU(Best Quality)
    Exit

Output Settings - MPEG Specific=VideoCD MPEG1, Video Bitrate=2376, Audio Bitrate=224, Motion Search=Good, Calculation=Normal (Best Quality), FPU (Best Quality),
    Rate ctrl padding start=60, Rate ctrl padding max=90, muxrate=1.58, resolution=352*480, Zoom=Full (16/9 or 4/3 input), Resize filter=BiCubic, Max Frame=10000, Volume Don't exceed=730, Render every=15.
    Exit

Note: There seems to be a bug in the DVDx's MPEG2 encoder. I found that if one varied from the 480*480 SVCD norm, when the encoding of the VOB was finished DVDx would report a 'cannot find where to write into the MPEG file' error, oh well, guess nothing is perfect....

  3. blondes, have you attempted the same settings with tmpeg? you may be surprised at the quality you will acheive. dvdx is promising and i emailed the author and is looking at a vbr option shortly which will make the program alot more interesting.I wouldnt consider xvcd near dvd quality due to the half res displayed. its a shame you dont have svcd playback because using dvd2svcd with cinemacraft would blow you away with its near dvd quality playback
