If you rip the VOBs off a DVD and then convert them to .avi and then to mpg, why can't you just convert the VOB's to mpg, and miss out the avi part ?

And why can't u directly convert a VOB file in TMPGenc but do u have to frameserve it first??????And yes...we all wear wooden shoes here in Holland... -
You don't need to convert VOB --> avi --> mpg. If you demux the VOB, you can get the mpeg2 and audio streams directly. You need to go to avi if you plan to re-encode to mpg (like you need to to get a smaller file size, e.g.).
You need to frameserve because VOB is mpeg2 and the way the picture information is stored in mpeg2 is different from avi. In avi, each frame is a fully represented, so a encoder can look at the full frame. mpg streams have only partial picture information included in each frame; it adds information on changes between previous frames and future frames - when playing mpg streams, the player looks at this information and re-builds the full frame. Frameserving does the same thing and presents the full frame to the encoder.
Hope that helped. -
You can open vob's in Tmpeg. I never frameserve my DVD rips. Rip the DVD as one large file, because Tmpeg can only open one file. You may have to convert the to mpg using Mpeg Tools because some vob's trick Tmpeg into thinking the file is finished before it actually has. I'm personally convinced that frameserving degrades color and contrast.
