I've got 14 hours of video in MiniDV format. I would like to make both VCD's and DVD's from it as quick as possible. Right now I have to capture as AVI file and then encode to MPEG file using a software encoder (Cleaner 5).
Any suggestions for real time mpeg encoders under $1000 or even cheaper?
How's the ATI All in Wonder 8500DV?
Thank you in advance.

What CPU do you have? This is really important, if you hope to get real-time encoding.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
Hi Mirror_Image,
The system I would be doing the encoding is on a Pentium III 600 Mhz with 1 gb PC-100 Ram. It's not great I know. I guess I should rephrase my question a bit and ask for recommendations for real time "hardware" encoders so that it's less work on the CPU. Does that help?
Any experience out there with the ATI All in Wonder 8500DV?

Speed is more important to you than output quality?
(my situation:
I was looking for a hardware encoder for a while and decided that unless I spend $1000 I'm not going to get as good quality video as I could with TMPGEnc. To me the highest quality MPEG was more important than overall speed. I'm just taking home videos of the kids and holidays and junk though so I only run an hour of tape every so often. Since I'm not on a deadline or anything, I figure I might as well go for the highest quality. I capture my miniDV camcorder video to AVI (via firewire), edit as AVI, render the whole thing as AVI, then let TMPGEnc convert the AVI into MPEG. Rendering as AVI and converting to MPEG can take a little while, so I just walk away from the computer for awhile or let them run when I go to bed.) -

I think you should go with software encoder, with a good CPU.
Here is my results"
I converted a DVD "Ronin" to SVCD format using exact default setting of DVD2SVCD software with Simle Resize, CCE 2.50, multi pass=3, with 2 PC, one is AMD XP 2000+,512MB PC2100RAM, 7200RPM HD
the other is DELL P IV 2.4 GHZ 533 MHZ bus, 512 MB PC2700 DDR RAM, same hard drive
the CCE encoder speed was about same for both PC which is ~2.01-2.15, total time about 4-5 hrs.
CCE speed 2.0 is two times of real time.
