I don't think they will die that fast... DVD burners/media is still expensive in some parts of the world, and besides, untill they'll start making high quality TV's no point in using anything higher then SVCDs.... I almost allways windowbox SVCDs to 448x544 and it look perfect, just like the original broadcast or DVD. Only annoying limit is that I have to change disc in the middle of the movie, but I can live with that...
Besides, I think VCD/SVCD gives nice 'Alternative' feeling, at lease until the big companies will drop the blu-ray discs on us which will probably be something as: Blu-Ray, Blu+Ray, Blu/Ray, Blu&Ray and so on, or maybe a new format will be released from China as alternative way of putting video on CDs or DVDs... Maybe then, and only with higher quality TVs everything will change...

At this point, I do a mixture of both. DVD blanks at $1 each (via internet) are actually cheaper ber byte than CDR blanks. I put my 1 hour shows that I watch on CD-RW, and the movies I record onto DVD+RW for the time being.
VCD has the advantage of being more portable (today) because you can play them in virtually any PC's CD-ROM. DVD's are much more compatible (in my house) with my DVD Set-top boxes.
This is an evolving technology, and I suspect that within a couple of years, DVD will be the mainstream for video (Dual-layer burning sure would be nice!)
