  1. Hello,

This is a copy of a message that I have sent to Ahead Nero Technical Support - but - I know from past experience - that they do not reply too promptly - so - I am hoping that someone here can help me out.

Also - I am posting this problem here as I am not sure which is the correct forum to use.

    Hi,

I am having a problem creating VCD's and SVCD's with Nero Burning ROM v55914 (and earlier versions from v5550) and up.

I am using an AOpen CDRW 3248 with the latest firmware upgrade from AOpen (Nero v5550 was bundled with this drive).

The problem is that after creating the VCD or SVCD I cannot play the files or copy the AVSEQ01.DAT or .MPG file from the VCD / SVCD back to the workstations hard disk drive for playback (or playback directly from the the VCD / SVCD).

If I use Microsoft Media Player to open the file nothing happens i.e. Microsoft Media Player displays 'Opening' at the bottom of the screen and the CDRW light goes on and stays on and thereafter you have to reboot the workstation.

    The same happens with PowerDVD.

If I try and copy this file back to the hard disk drive I get and error 'AVSEQ01: Invalid DOS function'

What I have noticed is that when you create the VCD or SVCD and drag the .MPG file (created with Vegas Video 3.0) to the Nero files window as displayed when creating a VCD or SVCD the size of the file (but not the duration) changes considerably e.g. an original .MPG file with a size of 500MB is displayed in the VCD / SVCD list as 450MB (not the correct figures but only quoted as an example). Does this have anything to do with my problem?

Nero checks the format of the file after dragging it to the Nero VCD / SVCD window and does not display any errors so I can only assume that the rendered file from Vegas is OK.

Also - you can highlight the dragged and dropped file in the Nero window and play or preview it prior to burning and it plays back perfectly.

There are no errors and the burn process is completed successfully.

I am also using all of the Nero default settings.

    What is the problem???

I have tried this twice now and both times the same thing happens.

The workstations configuration is as follows:

    AMD Athlon XP 1700+
    256MB DDR RAM
    Primary Master - Maxtor 20GB 7200RPM IDE
    Primary Slave - Seagate 20GB 7200RPM IDE
Secondary Master - AOpen 3248 CD Writer IDE
Secondary Slave - AOpen 1648A DVD ROM
    Windows 2000 SP3 and DirectX 8.1b installed.

DMA is enabled on all drives.

BOTH DRIVES ARE FORMATTED WITH THE NTFS FILE SYSTEM.

By the way - I can create normal CD-R disks with no errors or problems whatsoever.

Also Nero INCD v337 works fine.

I can write a VCD straight from Vegas Video and this works fine - I can playback and / or copy the file with no errors (but there is also a slight difference in the file size of the file written by Vegas and the original - unlike Nero the file is slightly bigger in size).

I have also tried using Nero Image Drive to create the same VCD / SVCD and the file can be played from the Image Drive with no problems.

Please help - I am now wasting blank CD-R and have just lost a 500MB .MPG file which I cannot replace as I deleted it after creating the VCD and now cannot copy it back from the VCD that I created!

  2. Hi,

Sounds like you have the same problem that I have http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=117873. Basically, everything seems fine until I burn my mpg onto the cd using Nero.

I also notice that the file is smaller, is this normal?

Why don't you try playing it on a standalone DVD/VCD player? It works on my Samsung DVD player and I find that the strangest thing!

  3. Hi,
I've had this problem before and it seems to be just a windows 2000 professional problem I don't get the error for any of my other computers but the one i windows 2000 professional on. I don't think that it is a burner or software problem because the vcd's or svcd's played well on my dvd player.

  5. Good Morning,

You guys are great - thanks for the replies.

I tried to copy the .DAT file from the VCD on my 98SE workstation and it copied fine - and - it also plays fine (at least I recovered the file I lost yesterday)!

    BUT:

In sheer frustration yesterday I downloaded and installed VCDEasy - AND - burned another SVCD (as I also had the same problem burning SVCD and Nero) this worked fine -SO - what does VCDEasy do differently from Nero???

I read one of the links in one of the replies on this thread and it mentioned much about compliance with VCD / SVCD Standards which I will now look into (unfortuanately I am one of those people who has to know WHY) and will post the results of my investigation on this board / thread.

    Thanks again.

    Dale Paterson.

  6. Hello,

Don't get too excited about my last reply. I (firstly) have just tried the solution of this link:

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=113880&highlight=

and my registry already contains the key value detailed in the above link.

  7. Hi Dale,

I have the same problem as you described in your first message. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a solution. Maybe an explanation but this doesn't help too much.

Ahead Nero admits there is a problem with some CD Writers:

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    Error on burned video CD

A copied Video CD can not be played or CDs with mode 2/XA tracks are faulty.
Some types of CD Writer can not write the mode 2/XA tracks correctly, e.g. the:

    Grundig CDR100IPW, HP 4020, JVC XR-W2080, Kodak CDR240, Mitsubishi CDVR2X4, Mitsumi CD-R CR-2401TS, Philips CDD2000, Plasmon CDR4220, Plasmon RF4100, Plasmon RF4102, Wearnes CDR-432.

With the following CD burners an update of the firmware to at least 1.25 often helps.

    Grundig CDR100IPW, HP 4020, Kodak CDR240, Mitsubishi CDVR2X4, Mitsumi CD-R CR-2401TS, Philips CDD2000, Plasmon CDR4220, Plasmon RF4100, Plasmon RF4102, Wearnes CDR-432.
    -----------------------------------------------------------

My CD Writer is actually a RW/DVD combo (LG/Hitachi GCC 4120B). It performed very well in many heavy duty tasks, but I failed to create VCD's. In my opinion, Ahead Nero might not be able to deal with all supported CD Writers in mode 2/XA. Maybe a firmware upgrade to my RW/DVD combo will solve this problem (I don't know if there is any).

If you have any success solving the mistery, post a message here for all of us in pain.

    Thanks,

    OldJoker

  8. the reason your files look smaller is because S/VCD are burnt in mode 2, this allows u to put 800 mb on a 700 mb CD. this is the reason why your file looks smaller than it should
