Hi There,
is there an application available that can reliably tell me the audio codec an avi file has, e. g. when virtual dub says "unknown"?
Is there something like a FourCC available for Audio codecs, too?
Thanks for helping!

check the 'file information' in vdub. if it says 'unknown' and '5 channel' in some boxes, then you got a 5.1 ac3 stream.
Save it as a .wav file from vdub (audiostream.wav) then rename the extension to .ac3 (audiostream.ac3). Now open in Headac3he and convert to a real .wav - NOW you can encode it to .mp2 etc ...
if you want to know anything else ... sorry, thats all I know about 'unkown' audio streams ... -
ok, I found the solution:

The problem was the missing divx audio codec. I never thought anyone would have ever used this one.
Thanks anyway!

Too bizzare. I wonder If mine has the same problem. I can't determine what type of audio it is. It's not WAV, its not MP3, its not AC3. I did manage to get an error somewhere along the line that made it look like it was some sort of DIVX codec. The file was 'Sum of All Fears' DVD to DIVX rip.
Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything...
