  1. Hi,

I have some .dat files, when I open thru TMPGenc it gives me "file cannot open/ unsupported" error message, when I try opening them thru VDub it gives me "cannot determine file type", once it even gave me some "mpeg stream mesh" error. Could anyone pls tell me how do i convert them to VCD format? I even tried increasing the priority of Directshow in VFAPI plugin to 4 !!! but to no help.

  6. Hi,

Sorry for the delay in reply to both Tommyknocker & Saito --

No, the dat file was from a normal VCD, the dat file was copied from the CD to the hard disk & now I dont have access to the original cd.

I even tried renaming the dat file to .mpg, but TMPGEnc still displays the same unsupported error.

  9. Why not use VCDGear to convert your *.dat back to Mpeg and then burn it to VCD using Nero?

Tmpeg's MpegTools will demux the file into it's .m1v and .mp2 components. Then remux and select vcd stream. I'm not sure but you might be able to just do the remux without demux. I use the remux to convert vob files to mpg.

Sadly, VirtualDub does not work with any video files ordinary people are likely to use. This means that for all practical purposes VirtualDub is vaporware -- a wonderful tool that just can't open real video files in the real world.
Specific examples: AVI files captured by ULead Medai Studio Pro 6.X cannot be opened in VirtualDub. AVI files captured in Adobe Premier 6.X cannot be opened in VirtualDub. Installing the Nimo Codec pack makes no difference. Changing filename extensions makes no difference.
VirtualDub just doesn't open real video files used int he real world by real people. This is not a user problem, it's a problem with the VirtualDub software. The file input routines written for VirtualDub are very badly designed and don't work adequately. TMPGEnc will open most video files that VDub can't.

Xed - My experience is exactly the opposite - When TMPGEnc fails to open an AVI, I can count on VDub to open it, and frame serve to TMPGEnc (99% of the times - there are of course AVI's that even VDub can't open...).
I find it hard to believe that VDub would have become the tool par preferance it is to many of us, (along with TMPGEnc and VCDEasy) if it was that limited in supported file formats as you claim.

  14. I tried opening thru TMPEG's demux tools but when I clicked on Run, it displayed "Illegal MPEG stream" error. While opening thru VDub it gave me "can't recognize file type " error & on one file it gave me "MPEG import filteracket sync error on packet stream (3fbf8) ". Pls help.
