  1. Hello everyone, great site!

Just got the duty of archiving all the family home movies thrown on me, and need a little help getting started. Basically I need to capture from VHS and burn onto CD-R, so they can be played back on home dvd players. Just got the ATI ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 32MB DDR (AGP), and have burnt a couple at the ATI MMC defaults for VCD, but the playback is nowhere near VHS quality. Can someone give me some tips, or point me to a website or thread, that has the optimal settings I should try? Pretty sure my system is capable of whatever, but here are the specs just in case.

    PIII 900
    256 MB PC133
    20 GB ATA-100 7200RPM

Using a JVC deck with svideo out, and just want to be able to get a decent picture so I can get through this stack of tapes,(8 tapes, 2 hours each!) Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  2. Will VCD 2.0 playback on a home dvd player? Thanks.

  3. VCD will playback on any DVD player which supports Video CD, and most do. However, the real question is will your DVD player support playback of CD-R or CD-RW disks.

First generation DVD players don't usually support CD-R and CD-RW disks. These players only playback commerical DVD and VCD disks, which are pressed rather than burned. Playback of CD-R and CD-RW disk requires a different laser wavelength. This is because these disks are burned rather than pressed.

The newest generation of DVD players have either twin lasers or special optics and can playback both pressed and burned disks.

Check the DVD Player compatibility guide on the left and look for your player to see if it will play CD-R and/or CD-RW disks.

  4. My DVD player will playback CD-R's, and CD-RW's. I have already tried a few. But the picture quality was BAD, to say the least. I was just wondering if VCD 2.0 was the same as regular VCD, if so, I know it will work with my player. Will the settings in the link above give me the highest quality possible for transferring VHS to VCD, or are there any better methods out there. I will try those settings and see how they work out. Thanks for the help guys!

This method will use a LOT of space, but capture the video using AVI then encode it with TMPGEnc. TMPGEnc encoding is supposed to be the best on a budget.
