  1. I'm reading all these posts about SVCDs with Nero 5.5.3.5. How is that possible? I try and get a message that I need the MPEG2 Codec available at http://www.nero.com. I go there and it says it's not available yet. This month sometime....

Where are you guys getting this from?

    Thanks!

I suppose one uses another MPEG-2 encoder to make an SVCD compliant MPEG-2 file. Well known MPEG-2 encoders are:
    - bbMPEG (freeware)
    - TMPGEnc (freeware, recommended, but only 1 month MPEG-2 encoding)
    - CCE, Cinema Craft Encoder (commercial)

  3. But how can I play MPEG2 movies? TMPGEnc can create mpeg2 movies but can't play.

Although this is not the correct forum, I'll answer this question anyhow.

You can play MPEG2 movies with a software DVD player like WinDVD or PowerDVD. I prefer WinDVD, because it recognises SVCD discs and allows you to use SVCD menu's. PowerDVD does not recognise SVCD discs, but you can play MPEG2 files by opening them in file mode.
WinDVD also installs some DirectShow filters on your system, so that you can also play MPEG-2 files in Windows MediaPlayer.

For more info click PLAY on the left hand side.

  5. But i've installed WinDVD 3.0.55 and it isn't playing mpeg2 movies (but PowerDVD plays them - only PowerDVD, no other prog).

Strange, does your WinDVD play DVD's? (note that DVD's are also MPEG-2). With my current WinDVD version (3.0.57) and with the previous 2.4 version I have never had a problem playing MPEG-2 files. Seems like WinDVD is not installed correctly on your system.

  7. To play the files on computers without a DVD software player I use the Elcard MPEG2 player.
    http://www.elecard.com
It is shareware and they have a full working demo with no time limit. They also have an MPEG2 Decoder that will allow you to use Windows Media Player to play MPEG2 files.

  8. email me if you need a MPEG-2 codec with no watermark or anything and no need to install a DVD prog on your PC - you can play the MPEG-2 files right in MS Media Player

    I'll send you the file.
