Hi - I am experiencing a random problem when capturing AVI using Ulead MediaStudio Pro/Virtual Dub etc and an Asus GF4 8460 with a Philips 7108 VIVO chip . I have put up two jpeg images from captured AVI files showing the problem, on the following web page:

What is happening is about 50% of the time when I capture an AVI image I get horizontal lines as shown in the first image. The other 50% of the time I get a capture without them as shown in the second image. As far as I can determine it is completely random and I have way of knowing until I review the capture. It is really annoying as often I only get one shot of capturing an image.

I am capturing Digital TV (PAL) from a Digibox in AVI @ 720x576 and then compressing to mpeg2 offline, using TMPGEnc plus. By going through this process I can get really good DVD quality video/sound when the AVI file does not have the horizontal lines. Once the lines are there, I cannot get a good mpeg2 video file, the lines are always visible especially on fast moving items.

As I understand it, it is interlace related, however I have tried de-interlacing when I convert to mpeg 2 using TMPGEnc plus, without much success. The resulting video image improves but the lines are noticable around edges of a moving image.

Does anybody have any idea what is going on i.e. why is it it random? And how I can overcome the problem? I suppose it could be the Philips Chipset or the Nvidia WDM video capture drivers.

When I look at the money I spent on hardware / software to get this rig up and running this is so disappointing.

Many thanks....Roger
