what areyou doing locking that post?

Most people use this foroum as they like having a bit of craic with people whom have the same intrest as they.

I was getting into the DTV seen especially since the beeb are now runing the show.

The only 2 good looking stations on sky where granada and bbc so I think the new beeb service will be great!

Going and locking the post is shit of you and you shouldn' have done it.

P.S. If you go and lock this post also then that says a lot about you, Some people just can't handle power. Being a moderator is a privilledge not a right.

    A really pissed,

  4. Was the moderator being paid by the Beeb to shut people up?

It wasn't just locked, it was censored: my post was cut!
I am going to include here what I said there (before it was guillotined)

My complaint wasn't with the reception - that is an all-or-nothing situation. With an aerial upgrade the picture was fine - only breaking up once or twice per day.

My complaint was with certain live broadcasts: notably football matches on ITV. They looked very low quality - smudgy field and players. The companies need to broadcast 1. Stronger signals and 2. Higher bitrate encoded mpeg2, else the same rumours will hit the net and the reputation will continue. It's upto them,

  5. That's the BBC plan (and I work for them!) Other bidders had planned on using the existing compression system and getting as many channels as possible onto the muxes. The Beeb have dropped the number of available channels to up the bitrate on the remaining ones. They have also changed the encoding standard slightly from 64QAM to 16QAM to give a more robust signal with better error correction. Also transmitter powers are to be doubled to give better reception across the country. This will be implimented on the new BBC channels by the end of the month. However ITV/Channel 4/Five are staying with the older 64QAM system for the next few months, so it will be a bit of a mish-mash until next year.

  8. I have been doing some tests at my location today to see if I can get the new Freeview service. I couldn't get the old ITV Digital one and the postcode checker says I can't get the new one either, but tests have proved otherwise, with all muxes (apart from ITV/CH4 which is still using the old 64QAM signal) coming in with good to excellent signal strengths on an old ITV Digibox. So the search is now on for the Hauppage Nova-t card at less than the 99 quid PC World want for it! I'll keep you posted.

    hay guys...

I didn't know KJ left (hope its not true), and baker's computer
    broke, he,he...
Hope no-one left, ...we're all fun friends you know. yeah, we're
all pals here. he, he... Anyways...

    energy80s,
Is that the SAME Freeview that DirecTV airs every weekend??
The quality of it is very good. But, then again, in my opinion, all
the channels are of good quality. Its the "source" quality, ie the
type of show, and age it was done etc, and if, wheather or not they
kept it in good condition and/or bla, bla, bla.
    .
    .
also, I don't know what the deal is over the the UK or Earupe (spelling)
but what's the difference w/ quality if one is view DirecTV signals
from USA or UK or Earupe etc. ?? ...Thought it should all be the same
quality, or is it the "content" or something else? ?
...VeggieTales are on this November, guess they aren't having
an concerts or MIHP's this November, but sometimes, they sneak in a new
    concert or something musical.

    Baker,
get your PC fixed and feal better!

    later for now.

  10. No, FREEVIEW is the new name for the UK's Digital Terrestrial TV service. This will give around 2 dozen TV channels and a dozen radio channels free to anyone who pays £100 for a decoder box. No subcriptions. I think that the UK equivalent of Direct TV would be Sky Digital, and the quality of the pictures there is terrible. Some channels look much worse than VCD quality and it is nothing to do with the source material, but with the way that they are encoded. Trying to squeeze 8 TV channels into one satellite transponder just doesn't work.

  11. I am on NTL in the UK and some channels can on occasion look absolutely awfull, full of macroblocks, not even 1/4 the quality of my homemade VCD's. One of the worst offenders is E4. This is particularly noticable on my 36" widesdreen TV.

i have asked this question before, but can anyone tell me if sky digital uses some sort of compression? because old episodes if law and order appear grainy and blocky..... the look worse than analogue!

Of course they use compression, all the channels use mpeg compression. The thing is they don't have to stick to the very strict standards like (S)VCD or DVD. Different channels use different data rates and even different resolutions. The best are generally the Terrestial channels with full D1 resolution and VBR encded streams with a Max of about 8Mbs. Some others use resolutions as low as VCD res of 352 * 288 and data rates as low as 1Mbs (or even less!) and you will find all sorts of resolutions and data rates inbetween these. If you want to find out more check out http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/. Go to there forums and look for the Digita Staellite - Technical questions forum. Search on there for loads of interesting info on Data rates etc.
