  1. I have been authoring mini-dvd's on cd-r with the help of a few selected software.

The main software i use is Roxio Video Pack 5 which the trial can be downloaded from www.roxio.com. This software writes dvd media on cd-r can create vcd, svcd and dvd. It is excellent you can use vcd resolution as dvd. The main resolutions i use are: -
    352 x 288 for Pal - VCD Res -Mpeg 1
    720 x 576 for Pal - DVD res -Mpeg 2
    Also can use
    352 x 280 for NTSC WideScreen Mpeg1
720 x 480 fro NTSC Widescreen Mpeg2 In time length you can record up to 78 minutes in vcd pal resolution and about 26minutes in dvd pal resolution and it still writes with folders Audio_ST and Video_ST and also ifo and bup for each vob file

You can not use vcd resolution in mpeg2 and you cant use mpeg 2 for vcd resolution.
This software is i think the only software available to do this and it doesnt need menus which just takes up more room on the disk.

This software can mux or demux avi, mpeg to vob and also can demux vob to mpeg and can copy video picture frames to jpeg which there for you can choose your favourite pic in the video and use it as wallpaper on your computer or print it straight to paper in colour.

Then there is the Audio which can use wave audio or compressed Wave audio which you can select compressions or Mpeg audio (MPA). For dvd audio i use in MPA which goes to 48,000 hz 16 bit Stereo and can be play through a pro logic reciever and if copy dvds can still use dobly digital ac-3.

But here comes the most important part if you want the minidvd to play on standalone dvd players. So far i know that this minidvd doesnt play on most dvd players. The dvd players that do are i one i use which is a Philips 736k model and it has NTSC and PAL playback. This is where it gets complex. Yes i know that ntsc and pal are tv broadcasting formats but this has now been converted into main Mpeg codecs and has a decompressor in this dvd player.

If it helps i came from Australia as different dvd players and brands with regional codes throughout the world except here where when i bought the dvd player it came with regional free code to play all dvd disks.

But the downside to this, for me it doesnt matter but when the minidvd plays it doesnt show time and hasnt got rewind or fastforward functions on my dvd player but as i said different model dvd players act different to each disk.

Ok that's just how i write minidvds and what dvd player i use.

Recording and editing my home media is another story with the different software. Feel free to ask any questions in reply to this post.

  3. And I forgot one thing.....why would I use a MiniDVD if I can get the same results with SVCD....I can fit more on one cd...get more compatebility...

And as far as I know....when u convert an Divx file... u can't get any better results....and also wich Divx file has ac3 in them....so U will still have stereo audio...

    Just a Thougt.....

  4. yes it is hard but you can just about download every dvd player manual or can ask retail people who sale dvd players.

yes svcd is good but it isnt dvd format it is still based on vcd as dat file and it depends on the mpeg format that is used because there are different versions if though it might be named the same. So when played back on my dvd player it is crap.

As for Divx that is more compression just about equal to mpeg4 and realplayer compression which that is at the moment only windows can use that compression.

Also it depends on the capture hardware and Divx just made for those people who just rip movies to put on the net as it doesnt take a a huge amount of room, there for has been converted and resized the resolution to fit the required size

  6. It was just a thougt I had...

If it works for U...that's okay...

There is one big advantage....if u want to save them for the future....U can burn it all to one DVD...and get your picture again complete...without converting...

  7. miniDVD compatibility is close to zero with only a handful of discrete players that can actually play it.

The only palpable advantage in using miniDVD over SVCD is the ability to author DVD style menus and true Dolby Digital audio.

Otherwise, for the same playtime, you can get BETTER quality video on a SVCD/CVD than the equivalent miniDVD (with Mode2 Form2, you get greater user data capacity than UDF --> higher average bitrate for your video).

BTW, there are plenty of ways of making a miniDVD and there are much better programs than Roxio Video Pack 5. Search the forums for "miniDVD" and "DVD authoring".
